While on a trip during
Easter Via the
rig road in the Simpson & Anne Beadel Hwy I had the miss fortune to use my spare tyre.
This tyre has been on the back door of my NM pajero since new (5/2002) and never used before.
I drove for approx 400ks on tare & 100ks on dirt, when this brand new tyre developed a bulge and vibration in vehicle.
I had been driving at about the speed in NT :), then while doing 120kph for 20 min the vehicle developed a vibration slowed down for a bit & it came back, stopped to
check, found tyre bulging on one side of the tread, with the lump being about the size of a hand and about 10mm high with no tread left on this.
Has anyone else come across this and have any ideas as to why?
It has been suggested that the sun may have caused this!
The vehicle is always in a carport when not in use and a vinyl tyre cover has always been fitted.

It may
well just be a faulty tyre. It could have happened if you had rotated it 4 years ago.
I doubt that the sun has caused it, since tyres are mostly exposed to the sun anyway.

My guess Ric would be that tyre overheated under load causing a partial internal delamination.
Air has probably found a path thru from inside to a more outside layer causing bulge

Agree,
Reason I rotate tyres including spares.
Have 2nd rim for such trips, so really 2 spares, so every pair of tyres are rotated at 10,000k.
I try and run new tyres for at least 5000k beofre a trip.
Like putting new radiator hoses and belts on and taking the old ones as spares before each major trip.

Hi Ric,
Robins reply is a fair guess, also consider the fact that an impact will damage the plys thus causing a weakness which will then result in seperation between those plys and air finding its way through. [if tubeless]

Had a similar prob with my old RAV. Punctured one of the normal tyres, put on the spare (brand spanking new, but 2 - 3 years old ie. had never been on the road). All ok for about a week, then all hell broke loose when the tyre blew and separated. Luckily rear tyre, separated at top of a steep
hill, so going reasonably slow (about 40ish), and was able to pull over and retrieve the shreds.
Vehicle also kept in a carport, with tyre under vinyl cover. I am no expert, but I think it is more than just bad luck. I now include the spare in all wheel rotations.
I think it must have somehting to do with being exposed to the weather, WITHOUT any weight or rolling somehow damages the tyre, so that when weight is added (ie put on the 4by) it stresses the tyre, and tyre fails.

I had my spare blow out while bolted to the back door!!! Was sitting inside the house and heard a massive bang. The tyre blew a 10cm split in the side wall, luckily the tyre cover contained it and it didn't smash the rear window!

I would think it is due to the age of the tyre. Tyres give off chemicals with time, this is why they must have good ventilation in tyre warehouses.
I would expect a tyre in the sun would age quicker but even if kept undercover they will still age.
I have had bubble under the tread and it feels like it is out of balance when driving, but it is out of round due to separation and airunder the tread.
4 to 5 years is the safe limit of the modern tyre.

Just wondering how much pressure was in that tyre - low pressure at 120kph will certainly heat the tyre up and cause it to delaminate.

It was a little more than that for about 300ks, but it had 42psi

That being the case, they tyre is defective, and you can get it replaced under the tyre manufacturer's warranty.

A bulge in your tyre? Or are you just glad to see me??
If it's as delivered I'd suggest you talk to the dealer?? "New" condition will be obvious; they may be able to negotiate something with the suppliers.
Good luck m8

Dealers would send you straight to the tyre
shop. Tyre shops are OK usually with a tyre bulge. They will ask you what pressures you've been using (answer is that its never been underinflated) and they get the rep from the company to inspect it and hopefully replace it pro-rata.

At 5/2002 tyre will be outside warranty. Manufactures warranty is 5 years from date of making. By time vehicle is made and shipped out to Australia tyre was probably made late 2001.

Yes I had same problem on spare on old Paj.
Bulged about 15-20 mm on tread to sideall join, without even going on the road. Probably (in my case) the heat in the NT as bulge was at the top and car is in full sun normally during the day. Tyre dealer got sick of me and I go sick of tyres and switched from Yoko Super Diggers to another tyre.
Cheers Baz

what you probably did was hit a sharp
rock or a pot hole which wiil break a cord
in the tread section and allows the tyre to distort at that point .
have seen it many times where roads are in need of repair .
