We are keen to go to the Mindil Beach Markets when we head to Darwin later this year but keep getting conflicting advice regarding when to go!!! Are the Thursday & Sunday markets the same? If not, which should we go to?!!

I found them to be similar... Either way there was plenty to eat but i thought a lot of what was for sale was crap... Could've been time of year though, my last visit was this January gone...

hiab, we were there midlish Jan and there was a Market running... I didn't seem as busy as when we were there in July/August nearly 3 years ago, I just put it down to being off-tourist season...

Was there on a Thursday night last July. The V8 Races were on, and it was coming up to Territory Day so the place was chockers. Live music, heaps of great food and a fantastic sunset at the beach.

We loved it!

I would agree. We were there at the same time(gotta love cracker night!!!!). If it is peak season you are going you are best to get there early to get a park and maybe a spot on the lawns. Yes there is a lot of crap at the stalls, but there is some good stuff too, same as most markets. Darwin sunsets are magic so make the most of it while you are there coz it's a long way to go back.

Cheers

Hey draff

The Thursday markets open last week, in the peak season being June, July, August, they are packed , however the Sunday markets are a bit smaller and not as crowded.

The Thursday markets have been known to have over 10000 people.

I know this because I Have lived in Darwin for 32 years.

Cheers Steve.

Steve was up there January and visited both Parap and Rapid Creek, I prefer Mindil Markets only for the entertainment and of course did sample plenty of the food loved the sunset. Mind you its only open outside of the wet season.

Well worth a Visit. I will be up there later this year and maybe a month visit this time:)

Go and enjoy its a great place.

The Mindil Beach Markets are not to be missed for their entertainment, food and those magnificent sunsets! Parap on Saturday mornings are my favourite though...a little bit more relaxed, great food and I thought it seemed more local people doing their shopping and having breakfast.

Rapid Creek and Nightcliff seemed even more laid back and more like the local fruit and veg with other stalls type markets where everyone goes to stock up for the week. This was a few years ago though and maybe they've changed.

They're all good and all worth spending some time wandering around and experiencing.

Thursdays is probably a bit quieter. We went a few times while we were living up there. Agree that not a great deal of good stuff for sale but there is some that's not bad. Anyway the main reason to go is the atmosphere and the sunset over the beach!

Hi Draff,
When we lived in Darwin we used to go to the thursday night market. Went with friends. Took it in turns to be waiters. One family ate while the other bought and brought. Followed with convivial chat under the stars. So much variety of food from around the world. Never got tired of it.
