Just bought a new laptop to take on my travels( never thought I would) and was wandering if it is really safe to run it of the Honda EU10I gen set.Iwas told it would be ok when I bought the gen. but just want to make sure with others who have done so.

Yep,
According to Honda (up to you if you believe them or not!) the EU series generators put out better quality cleaner power than many people get at the mains.
I have no qualms running laptop from our EU10i
Cheers

If in doubt you can run them off the vehicles DC12V with an adaptor. My laptop runs something strange like 19V.

Hi,
We run a laptop for moving map, email and of course internet and were told by "those that wshould know" it is not wise to do so unless you have a proper full sinewave inverter. I would not want to take a risk without that as it is too valuable and we are self funded retirees and need to keep intouch with investments so I personally do not risk it.
Be careful if you purchase one though and ensure it is a full sinewave and not a cheap version.

A Honda eu10 does give a clean power..... Which means and this is why you pay so much more for it. It will give 240v positive peak and then 240v negative peak, 240v positive peak and 240v negative peak etc..... It will keep doing that as long as the generator is going.
A cheap generator ie a 2 stroke from some of the hardware shops may give 240v positive peak 180v negative 290 positive peak 240v negative peak 200 positive peak 220 negative peak and so on.
The honda eu10 and honda eu20 will be fine.... That is why you pay so much for them
You will not have a problem. I run a laptop and an external hard drive at the same time to download pictures. My laptop and hard drive is very important to me

That is why it is called AC, Alternating Current. It alternates from positive to negative and creates a sine wave. where as DC is direct current which means the power is 13.8, 0, 13.8, 0, 13.8, 0 and so on.

Actually the 240 volt value is a RMS (root mean square) value where the peak value is more like 339 volts approx. :-)

Hey guys, you are assuming that you get 240v ac of course, then it changes direction at 50hz or 50 times a second+>->+>-and back again.
Extfilm, you may like to explain your 13.8 and 0 theory....... I though 0 when it had no power ;-))) Of course dependent on
battery power and the charge to the battery.

You will robably find that most laptops run on only 12 - 22 V DC anyway, so it don't matter what sort of gennie you use to generate the 240V that goes into the AC/DC converter. I've run my IBM off various gensets &
inverters without any problems for a couple years now.

I'm not sure if your intent is to run the Laptop off the 12 volt outlet from the gennie, or from the 240 volt AC outlet through your Laptop's power adapter.
If the latter, it doesn't matter as the fixed mode power supply through the adapter will balance out any fluctuations that may occur in the generator's supply.

Yes Iwill be using it through the 240 ac supply from the gen set.As to what Iwill be using the laptop for, it will be usedfor downloading photos, music from itunes onto the ipod, playing dvd's,connecting to my g.p.s. for storing weypoints, access to maps from the Magellan software, playing the odd game and of course accessing the internet when I am in town.Hopefully I will justify the cost of buying one.
