HI to everyone. We are planning a trip in the next week which will take us from Cameron's Corner, to Lake Eyre and then on to Warakurna, Sandy Blight and back to Alice. We are having some discussions about various ways to cross the Simpson and have read of a tour which crosses north of Lake Eyre from Oodnadatta (or Macumba station) and ends up on the Birdsville Track. We plan on coming out of the Simpson over Warburton Crossing (if it is passable in another 3 weeks) and thought this would be a really interesting place to visit. Cannot find any tracks and seek advice from anyone who has tried this before. Many thanks

It is sometimes possible to travel from Macumba HS to Kalamurina HS (Oodna to B'ville) via the Macumba/Kallakoopa/Warburton Creeks. The only "safe crossing" is at the northern end of the lake just above the Warburton Groove at a place called Stoney Crossing, just above the confluence of these rivers but it is always a muddy crossing even in very dry years. Given the current flow into the Groove this crossing will be impassable for at least two years.

Thanks Stevo, sounds as if it is not a good option for this trip. Would be quite different to go over that terrain though in the dry.

As champs said, with the Warburton & Kalakoopah rivers flowing the low area to the north of Lake Eyre will be impassable for some time. When we went in by boat the area was just a salty swamp. The reason there is nothing written on the southern Simpson I'd suggest is that permission to enter from the Macumba & Peake Station side is rarely if ever given so no one should be in there. Camping permits are available for Kalamurina but I believe the tracks still stop over 20km from the Lake as it gets too boggy most years.
Cheers Craig..............

Hi Craig - you've given really good advice. For the ten years we've been out there we've wanted to do this trip - been wet/sodden/flooding every time!

And that during the drought!

It makes you wonder if it will ever be passable. If it ever is please let me know 'cause id love to have a look through there too.

You do need permission to stay legal which is rarely granted.

Thanks everyone. Sounds as though we will have to get a group up to do it someday. I guess it is always good to have something to look forward to. We certainly won't consider it for this trip from your advice - thanks
