That's a bit harsh.
Mine is fine for securing the wife's handbag.

adjust the handbrake at the wheel before adjusting at the other end.

I hate drum brakes and the 80s handbrake is a good reminder of why.
As others have said, adjust them correctly at the wheels, then adjust the handbrake end so that it takes 9 clicks to pull up. Every few thou (say when you change the oil) just do a quick nip up at the handbrake end so that you only need 9 clicks again. At major
services you need to get back underneath and fiddle with that danged adjuster at the wheel.
Drives you mad but they do hold on real ggod if properly adjusted.

Just NEVER trust them, I know of two vehicles that have been written off when they rolled away while the driver emptied the mailbox!

Yeah that could happen on my 80 series if it was over about 1° incline. Damn handbrake never worked on this thing.

My sister borrowed my 80 series - woke up the next morning to find that it had rolled out of her drive and had stopped acoss the road, blocking most of it off... (It took her a while before she told me that...)
I put it into first gear low range and turn the engine off when launching he boat.

I put new shoes and cable on my 75 series with rear disc brake. I think its the same as 80 series.
I got some mild relief but not for long. I think the drum radius is maybe worn from previous owner driving with the handbrake on slightly.
Ive completely diassembled and cleaned/oiled them and did it much like the 80scool tech link
Is it possible to get shoes with a thicker lining? I going to do them tomorrow again.
How I hate these things. The hand brake on my 73 series is much more reliable
