We hope to start travelling around mid to end July 2007 and we just purchased an Ultimate camper after 18months uhmen and ahren. Decided this way because both of us are in good health and it's the right time still to rough it somewhat before slowing down into perhaps more comfort. It will be towed by the new Pajero NS SWB diesel.
Anyone on this forum who has the same camper and would like to share some experiences, good or bad.
We would love to hear. Planning to travel for 2-3 years and then maybe switch to a caravan.

Hope to do a 4WD course soon as well.

Cheers

I'm here Willie......just spent most of the day entertaining visitors etc; it's my oldest lad's 18th birthday today.

The Ultimate we have was purchased in Feb 1999; 2nd hand. It's first owner had it for just over 6 months, during which time he and his daughter did a trip around "The Big Block" and then he decided he didn't need it anymore.

Since we've owned ours, it's been to Cape York twice, the Gulf country and NE or NT on a separate trip, across the Simmo plus too many other trips to enumerate here and now.

There have been small jobs I have done along the way to make the Ultimate more user friendly for our specific needs. On the other hand I have seen what other blokes have done to theirs' and it is amazing how many variations to a theme that owners can concoct.

Probably the main change I made to mine (and I've had a direct influence on the other 3 owners that Pesty mentioned, as they are all friends of mine) was to change the 3 way fridge over to a 2 way Engel unit. It is MUCH more efficient in really hot weather and it is simpler to maintain a desired temperature. Fitting this fridge necessitated (I think, anyway) the fitting of a 2nd battery and a much better on-board 240v battery charger. The beauty of the Engel is that it senses the presence of 240v as soon as you plug the power in, and runs off that source ....no need to manually changeover anything on the fridge.

I'll let you have a play and if you come up with any questions, don't hesitate to let me know....... As the others on here already know only too well, ol' Roachie is not backward when it comes to voicing his opinion or ideas....hahahaha

Cheers mate

Roachie

Gerhard, perhaps you had better MM Roachie and ask him what not to do so you don't bend the Gull wing doors. I can assure you it's not a design fault.

Hey Big Ears,
It's a 1.6 Lt blower that is hanging off the side of a 4.2 nissan petrol running at 8psi boost on straight LPG by Gas Research with 2X100lt tanks, get around 4-5 Km/Lt "normal" driving.
All the manifold and associated hardware is custom made.
Haven't had a chance to put it on the dyno yet but it goes quite well, pulls better in the lower rpm range than any diesel I've driven, including 6.5 V8's, from 600rpm onwards, runs out of pull at 3500rpm.
Will put up the dyno graph for those interested when I get around to doing it.
You thinkin of bolting one up to the side of the yota are ya ?

Cheers
Pezza

runs out of pull at 3500rpm?...take it out of first gear :)))

did check out the possibilty of putting one on the 100 series petrol i had.....but thought the money would be better spent if it went towards new TD...so i went and got one.....

Had a blower on a 998 mini deluxe back when i was young........as fast as a
cooper S ....but it ..the gear box, in first, didnt like the blower...okay in second and thats what I did for a couple of years ...take off in second....first was stripped... :)
and i dont have big ears!

Gerard, I can recommend Vic Widman's 4wd course depending on where you are in NSW. He goes from basic to advanced. MM me if you are interested and need contact details.

No affiliation, it was just great when we did it.

Have fun, RayJen

Hi there Gerard,

We have number 10 (from 1996) and like Roachie we were lucky to pick it up second hand. It had already done a few interesting trips and this has continued with regular long trips to the centre, nth qland and cape work. As you'll find out like most Ultimate owners we think it makes for real 5 star camping.

We've added a few things along the way but setle in with yours and feel free to ask by MM if we can assist with anything.

Congrats ona great choice.

Peter

Hi Gerard
We also have an Ultimate Camper (431) and are very happy with it. Ours has not had a 'hard' life up to now as most of our camping has been in State Forests and National Parks around Southern Queensland. We have not found a need to change anything. There has been much discussion about the standard fridge and as you have already seen, 'Roachie' has seen the need to change his. Our experience has been that the standard one works very well on gas and that is the way we do it. The only thing I am particular about is keeping the camper as close to level as I can as I have been led to believe that the fridge is very sensitive about this. All in all the camper is an excellent product. Hope this helps.
Brian
