What is the best thing I can "flush out" differentials with? I have emptied muddied oil and want a clean housing to refill. I have a spray gun with nozzle for engine cleaning... was thinking if it's best to fill it with something (degreaser?) and flush out any muck before filling the diff up with new oil.

Plexus,

DON'T use degreaser, the residue with affect the new oil. Try some diesel, as its a light oil. When you fill with new oil, only use it for few hundred clicks then drain and refill. The extra oil will be far cheaper than re-racing the diff. Hooroo...

Thanks, people... diesel it is! Only one more question: can I do say 1000km before changing the oil, or do I really have to change it after only a few hundred clicks? Reason I ask is that after tomorrow I have a trip on and I won't have time to do a few hundred clicks locally before setting off... or had I *better* make the time to do so?

Just drive far enough to get the oil really hot, Plexus, then drain it. This will save the temptation to do full trip on contaminated oil, and possible repercussions. Have safe trip.

We're off to Emerald tomorrow, 1760 km round trip, test out new 79 series turbo ute. Have to be careful we don't get some holiday snaps!!
Hooroo...

Back car up onto ramps, fill only with diff oil do not use diesel. Overfill as much as you can and go for a drive. Drain and refill to correct level.

Ensure diff breather cleaned out and extended up high.
