I have a 5 month old Prado with an ARB bullbar. when I drive over a rough road there appears to be a rattle from the drivers side and when a I hit a bump there is a clunk. I have had the car back to ARB and they could not find a problem.I had Toyota
check it out and they found that the air-conditioning pipe was rubbing on the bullbar and had worn through. ARB were very good and replaced the air con pipe but I still have the same rattle & clunk. This is my second prado in 3 years and my last one had the sovereign bullbar and I had no problems.
Has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions.
Regards
Steve

Hi Steve probably a stupid question but did you have the bullbar put on or was it on there prior to you buying or fitted when you bought new but was put on by ARB through Toyota in other words you hadnt driven it prior. Regards Steve M

Hi there Steve, thats what I was getting to. So really is it the bullbar or some thing else as you didnt drive it prior to the bullbar being fitted, maybe some thing totally different not involving bullbar maybe a
suspension issue. Might be looking in the wrong direction. Not been sarcastic towards you just saying that if you didnt drive vehicle prior to buying it then maybe even changing from bumper bar to bullbar has nothing to do with the noise you can hear or feel. Maybe
suspension component. Just athought thats all.Hope you find it nothing worse then a noise or some thing you can feel but dont know where its coming from. I'm having the same issue at the moment with a thump in the rear of my prado still havnt found whats causing it.Regards Steve M

Thanks Steve for your suggestions, I have the car going into ARB next week to have my compressor fitted under the bonnet and I will get them to have another look and also
check the
suspension. I have a mate that had a rattle on his prado for the last 2 years and he finally found that one of his headlights was slightly loose. I have checked
mine but they are ok,as you say it's frustrating when you have a noise and you cant find it.
Have a good day
Regards
Steve

Steve
I have the same vehicle and bull bar. No problems. Therefore it's an installation issue.

why? bolts never slacken? nuts dont vibrate loose? bullbars dont move about and elongate the holes? recently hit something? wallaby, roo, cat(extra points if you say yes to cat)

The bars ARB made a couple of years ago have changed to recently, The older one's say over 2 years old never did vibrate as much as the new bars do.
I have heard ARB have had a lot of complains about there new bars. made the Lcool Prado forums can help you more.

Hi there Patrol, was actually talking to a mate the other day with current model prado and new arb bull bar, turns out its not the bar moving about as its bolted as we all know to the chassis rails turns out to be the body itself shaking about on the rubber mounts. You dont notice it without bar on cause nothing there in front of you to compare with but with bullbar sitting in front of you the bar is actually sitting still bolted to rails and its the body shaking around.Would take a while to get used to I 'd reckon. Stevep, i bought my Prado brand new 9 months ago and had a steel Toyota roobar fitted before i took delivery. When i took it off road onto a corrugated(spelling?) road there was a very bad clunking sound on every rut i hit. I took it back to Toyota and they told me that the alignment of the roobar when installed was not exact and was actually hitting the (passenger in
mine) front quarter panel. I have since driven in far more extreme terrain never to have heard the noise again. The roobar movement does take some getting used too, i haven't driven off road at night but i would imagine that the spotlights would shake considerably maybe to the detriment of the driver.

Hi Steve,
My fellow 4wd mate has a Prado with Arb bullbar and his fog lights, not
driving lights, worked loose.
Could try there.
As you know, the Prado is as quiet as a mouse otherwise.(I have one also, but with the sovereign bar) So the rattle must be annoying to say the least.
Good luck
Alan

Just a thought, but I had a clunk in my Pajero when I drove over rough ground.
Took it to Mitsubishi a few times, and they couldn't replicate the problem in the workshop. I ended up getting a mechanic mate to sit on the bullbar while driving over some rough ground (on private land) and the clunk turned out to be a loose shock absorber.
Dunno if it helps, but that's my experience.

there is probably something in the tubing of the bar. probably a welders screwdriver or spanner. go and get it xrayed at a welding testing place.

Just replaced my
suspension after 50000kms (5000 off road)2005 Prado turbo diesel front
suspension shot. I couldn't even fit my little finger between between rubber stop pad and arm. Had factory bullbar and winch fitted new. Looks like the factory
suspension couldn't handle the extra weight. Toyota so far don't wan't to know about it but I might take it further.
I had similar sounds from the front could never find the problem till new
suspension went in.

Hi Life4orce,
I was speaking to someone that had the same problem with
suspension problem as you, He told me that he had to replace the shockies after 6 months because the factory fitted could not cope with the weight of a steel bullbar & winch.

Steve
I have a similar setup.
The rattle (in my case on the passenger side) was caused by the fact that ARB had not properly secured the front of the inner guard liner to the bullbar. This was rectified by fitting a couple of cable ties.
Other Prado owners experience rattles in ARB bullbars caused by the movement of the black spotlight blanks in the bottom of the bar.
I'm not sure about the "clunk" - would be interested to hear how this is fixed.
Rattles of any description are a real PITA....
