Mr Bauer, I can't help with the sleeping bags sorry. Maybe Mrs Bauer can find some easy dishes here:-
http://www.chuckwagondiner.com/
It is an American site but it does have some easy, tasty meals for all tastes.
Happy trails,
OzeSheila.

Hi there bauer, we have Roman bags rated at -8. A pretty middle of the range temp wise. We have had cheaper ones but are no where near as good zipper wise, internal thermal material etc. There is a huge range out there. We borrowed my brother in laws one weekend just to try it out it was shaped like a mummy. Neither my wife or I could stand it. I hate not having room around me and these things are like been in a cocoon ended up just throwing it over the top of myself as a blanket. Not getting private here but I sleep in my undies (
well most of the time) even in the snow in the roman bag and have been it temps rated lower then the sleeping bag and even in my undies I was as warm as. Now depends on where you are camping at but some where like up the cape a -8 sleeping bag and you will probably
cook but we have found the -8 bag pretty universal temp wise for us and the other thing is if you buy two of them you can open them up and sip one side together and if there the big singles when joined together there bigger then a queen size quilt. I have had other brands over the years but the romans the best we have ever had and the ones we have now are over 15 years old. Yes they are dearer then the average ones you get, but like anything you get what you pay for. If you like your sleeping space dont get the mummy shaped ones. Another thing is if you dont want a queen size blanket you can still join the two of them totaly together for those nights you and your wife are feeling romantic and can both slip into the two bags joined as one. Regards Steve M

generally the case with all sleeping bags. Ive spent many a night in minus 0 conditions, in me jocks and been warm as toast. However prior to me finding some wisdom, used to be alot colder in the same conditions when wearing clothes.
Dont know why, just experience. I have been told this by many an outdoorsman/woman

I have a Roman -5 and find it a good all rounder. I have used it in sub zero temperatures and been as warm as toast to the extent I generally don't zip it up. I use it in a swag with a 2" foam matress.
I'll be on the Nulabor around the 13th June so if you see two silver 100 Series cruisers, one with a large ExploreOZ sticker on the side of the tube on the roof, hail us.

Hi Bauer,
We have a quilt in our camper so when you set up the bed is ready. If we know it is it is going to be colder we put a polar fleece blanket over the top.

Bought some good sleeping bags from Kmart camping section. I think they are only rated to -7, but keep me as warm as toast during winter in
the desert regions.
Don't skimp on your sleeping bag, you'll regret it if you do.
As for those who sleep without clothes etc, it depends upon your age etc.
When I was younger I also found that the way to go. One night at
Yulara I found that it definately wasn't !! I even had to wear socks !!

I guess a lot depends on whether you're sleeping with someone else or not, but give me a good doonah and flannel sheets any day. There's nothing worse than not having room to stretch or not being able to throw a leg out to cool off a bit. Not to mention having enough room to throw a leg over ;))))
Metal zippers and trying to sleep? no thanks.
And as for sleeping in clothes, nah, normal clothing like denim jeans seem to make things worse.

G day Bauer
We always get our stuff from the local camping store, as long as he is in the " ball park " with his prices, we don't care
The Mrs & me got 3, -10 bags and a couple of old ones crappy ones, from St Vinnies, to use as throw overs. And believe me there are times when we need them all of them.
Cost under $100 each for the good ones, but quality comes first.
As far as a good cookbook for camping, there are lots out there =, but we do not use one ,, just go for it, and if we have a
great camp oven and just chuck everything in it.
They are brilliant
Cheers
Bucky

Right on Bucky,
We carry a couple of old bags that we can unzip right around and use as them as throw overs. When the temp drops way down in the early hours it is easy to just pull over an old down bag as doona. Very light weight and they stuff into any old corner to stop rattles etc if required.

hi there
we bought some sleeping bags from kangaroo tent city last year (can't remember the brand name)
it was rated -5. but the kids always complained how cold it was last july in the outback. i paid 150.00 each and i'm not happy with the product. so, just be careful and really do
check the material.

I find a quilt (doona) best of all. Re
Camp Cooking, tell Mrs Bauer to go to Google Search (on the computer) and type in
Camp Cooking Australia. She will find heaps of links and cookbooks. Good luck

Hi
Wife and I have two doona's, one for over the top and the other underneath. They both have different temperature ratings. The idea is that if the outside temperature is a little warm we use the 'Summer' rated one on top and when the temperature drops we swap over and use the 'Winter' rated one on top. Hope this helps.

Buy a couple of cheap beanies too - a lot of heat is lost from the head and if you don't wish to use the hood of the bag a beanie makes a _big_ difference on really cold nights.
