G'day

Any pros and cons of mounting Kaymar rear wheel carrier on left hand side versus right hand side ?

My fridge is on the left hand side so not sure which will be the best scenario ?

Appreciate any feedback ?

Birdy - faced with that decision 10 years back, we went for left hand hinge, so the wheel did not stick out on the road when stopped against the kerb.

That makes it easy to open as gravity helped my wife, and we managed to maneuvre around the drawbar of the CT. That worked fine with a left hand side fridge.

When we got our caravan, we took the rear carrier off as the spare can go under the car again on mainly bitumen running, and the left mount got in the way of the van drawbar.

I suggest that you and fellow users just try a cardboard mock up of the size of the spare with any trailers you might use and see how it looks.

Happy deciding!

Passenger side rear wheel carrier usually has gravity on its side when you open in an urban environment, i.e. camber of the road etc but you need more space for loading if parallel parked as you have to get around the opened spare wheel.
If mounted on the driver side you will need a latch to keep the wheel in the open position for the same reason as stated above but you don’t need as much room at the back for loading when parallel parked.

These are the main reasons I can think of over choosing side for a rear wheel carrier.

As mentioned gravity, road safety and I find using right hand for operating the latch is easier.

Mr Birdy ,

Mine is on the passenger side and I have never thought to myself "gee , wish I'd put it on the othere side " - so I think I got it right .

Why don't you ring Kaymar if you are not sure . They will have heard all the stories .

Save having to decide and get two wheel carriers. LOL.
A word of caution. If there is any chance of this, think about it now, because on the Kamar, the arms for a twin set-up are shorter than for a single.
I wanted to put the second one on a couple of years after the thing was fitted. I could either throw away the single arm and pay an exhorbitant amount for two new arms, or take to the single arm with oxy and welder. Did the latter and no problems.

Hi there truck,

What did you use to brace the two sections once you cut and shortened them? I'm contemplating the same thing at the moment, did you just use a slightly smaller bit of box section steel as an internal sleeve?

Thanks,

Ross.

Didn't actually shorten the arm. I cut off the upright section and simply moved it about 50mm away from the centre of the vehicle ie back towrds the pivot.
The original was only butt welded so just did the same. Mate (who is a real welder as opposed to me) used his MIG.
If I had shortened the arm, it would have been necessary to move the catch as well, so I was just taking the easiest route.
For the second wheel, I brought the genuine Kamar short-arm.
I've done about 45k, including 5000 on last year's Simmo trip and couple of Vic high country trips, since the change, and no sign of problem.
Cheers

If you really can't decide then get a dual one!

From what everyone else says I would go with LHS.
We have a dual and you can actually take the 2nd arm off if you're not using it or alternately leave the arm on but no tire, however you may have to open it to access your boot depending on the type of vehicle you've got.
