GPS leads woman off beaten track

A Melbourne woman who relied on her car's computerised navigation system to direct her to Port Campbell had to be towed by a local farmer after getting bogged on a bush track 30 kilometres from her destination.

A farmer rescued the woman with his tractor about 30 minutes drive outside of the south-west Victorian town of Carpendeit, according to Victoria Police.

"She was following her GPS but it took her down a road which turned into a muddy four wheel drive track," Senior Constable Scott Thompson from Port Campbell said.

The woman called 000 just before 8pm last night, but was unable to tell police her exact whereabouts, so officers at the Warrnambool communications centre coordinated a number of cars to search the general area.

A farmer who had seen the woman's car near his property heard of the search over his police scanner and alerted police to the woman's whereabouts.

The farmer then met the police on Horans Road, where the woman was stranded, and towed her out of the mud with his tractor.

"She was just a bit concerned that she was a bit lost in an area that she wasn't familiar with" Senior Constable Thompson said.

Maybe lessons in how to use the thing should have been part of the deal when she bought it??

Then again why should we be surprised? Most women can't read a paper map let alone an electronic one :-) (Now I'm ducking for cover)

The risk with GPS is that it is often followed blindly without any cross-reference check..........

Toooo busy watching the GPS and didn't see the conditions of the track in front.

Some people place a lot of faith in the computer thingy on the dash and good ole CDF goes out the window.

It says she could not give the police her exact whereabouts. If she couldnt even find the coordinates on the GPS, how much did she really know about it to start with??? Michael.

We were driving around lake Eildon a couple of years ago when just on dusk we found a small car shiny side down on the Jameson road about 20k from Eildon in Vic. The occupants were shaken but OK and asked us if we could contact someone in Eildon to get them out.

No phone coverage so we headed of to town. It was after 6 when we arrived and almost everything was closed. We found the cop shop but it was unoccupied but did have an emergency call button that put us through to Police Ops in Melbourne.

"Where is it?" they ask.

"I can give you a GPS waypoint." I reply.

The bloke tehn told me that they could not use a Lat/Long (this was Jan 2006), so I had to convert it into grid for him.

There is a little village in England with the same problem.

The street navigation systems use this little lane that often floods as a bypass to the village. They can have hundreds of people a week caught.

Ended up putting a sign up at the entrance to the lane.
Only a few people a week ignore the sign now.

It was probably a navigator type of GPS not a real gps that shows Lats n Longs etc.
One should always carry paper maps to be sure.
Ans she probably did not know to zoom out so that she could see where she was on the screen.
Then again a blonde victorian fem fatal????????
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.
