We are leaving in 3 weeks to head north for the winter and ultimately spend a week or two in Darwin, but am seriously wondering if Darwin has enough van sites available.

We know of 3 couples from here in our home town who are already on the way, and another 22 couples who are leaving in the next 4 to 6 weeks, and thats just from one town of 45000 people, let alone the rest of the country.

I think by the time we get there it will be fairly full. Now I had better start thinking of booking in at a park just so we can arrive with some confidence that we can get in.

I have heard that the park at Lee Point is very large. Any suggestions on which park is worth trying.

Hmmmm Steve. Dunno about your stats.... LOL

Darwin population was around th 18,000 mark when I got there in 1968.

In 1975 it was severely depleted after Cyclone Tracy.

I think your 45,000 mark was probably 1985

But then again, I could be wrong......

Cheers

Yeah you got me, I believe it was about 40 odd 000 in 1974 before the cyclone give or take, my point was Darwin has grown some what since then.

Cheers Steve.

Now i know why i frustrate myself and travel OUT of season, bad weather is one thing, a million people jammed together is not for us.
Have fun, Darwin is a great place!.

Stayed in Shady Glen a couple of times.
Very good facilities.
Last time there the RAAF had invited 5 other countries to join them in excercises.
No curfew at Darwin Airport----all bloody night and day!!!!!!!!
45 jet fighters --all LOUD.
However it was good fun.
Then the Darwin Show being next door made it interesting with " get your hot donuts here" every thirty seconds and the associated showground noises til midnight.
Friday night the local car racing followed by the dogs on Saturday with one night of domestic fighting in the tent next door made it a memorable stay.
However wouldn't have had it any other way, a great place Darwin.
Don't forget to get a feed of fish and chips on the wharf after dark.
Magic.

Thats why we go and camp in the bush, usually closest campers at least 10 klm's away, if you want noise and people, I guess its easier to go to your closest city and enjoy

Hi Cruiser,
While I haven't stayed at the other parks in Darwin, I chose the Lee Point park each time coz it was about the only one which was not on or near busy roads. It's large, enough shade, and each time, I have enjoyed the stay there.

is darwin big enough? to me it is too bloody big!, i avoid it if at all possible, when i have to go up from katherine i stay at coolalinga motel/van park, not too bad. and there is a woolies bottlo just up the road, gotta love that. i am living in the past but i want the old darwin back, when it really was a frontier town, men were men, and women... well they were at home cooking tea.

There is a big one near Palmerston, on the left handside as you are heading out of town - unfortunately I can not remember its name, but I think it was a Big 4 - used to pass it when travelling from Robertson Barracks in & out of town.

Book ahead if you will be there around Darwin Cup week! I recommend Lee Point C/P. No aircraft noise yet close enough to the city. Great place. Hope to move there soon.
