Can anyone tell me why Diesel prices throughout New Zealand's North Island are far cheaper than Australia averaging NZ$0.975 where we are forced to pay around $1.26 upwards. Its it because most diesel cars are more fuel efficient than petrol. My Landcruiser 100 Sahara powered by a 4.2 Turbo Diesel averages 11.4 litres per 100kms, which is less than most popular 6 cylinder Australian made cars or has it something to do with oil companies profiting from the Diesel Fuel Rebate Scheme introduced in 2002.

The New Zealanders get an additional levy - where the owner pays per kilometer in addition to what is paid at the pump.
Most of diesel price in Australia is Tax.

"Most of diesel price in Australia is Tax."

Thats what the oil companies want you to believe.
38.123 cents plus the 10% GST is tax

at $1.30 that makes 50 cents. The excise (38 cents) doesnt change with the price and I reckon the Gov regrets bringing that in around 5 years back.

Your right about the km tax in NZ though. If you do it legally (dont disconnect your speedo) it works out around the same or slightly more than here from memory. That tax/excise is also on ANY fuel other than petrol i.e LPG, CNG, bio etc

Thanks for the correction Fisho. Didn't realise they had fixed the excise.
Cheers

Kiwi's have to pay an additional fuel tax on top of the pump price if they want a diesel.
I do not know how close this tax brings it to our price.

Others are correct.
Here in NZ my last fill cost 79.9 cents per litre. Local supermarket offered a 20 cents rebate if you purchased $100 worth of groceries.
Normal price is 97.9c, but varies - like Australia usually upwards.

Private diesel vehicles must pre-pay and display a sticker with the kilometers purchased. It has details of rego, weight, odometer readings.
The heavier the vehicle the more you pay.
My hiace van 3000cc 2200kg cost about $230 for a 10000km coupon.
In my case this equates to about 20 cents per litre.

Diesel here in central Nth Island is NZ$.989/litre today. Road User Charges (RUC) as mentioned above works out at about 20c /litre = NZ$1.189/litre. Todays exchange rate is approx NZ$1 = A$89c. So the litre of diesel in NZ at $1.189 is equal to A$1.06. I think you may be right about the oil companys.
