80 Series lift 2in or 4in - OME

Hi All, I have just installed OME springs and nitrochargers to my 80, i originally wanted a 3in lift, but i was convinced that a 2in would be better.
My vehicle has: FRONT - dual batteries, 1hdt engine, steel bar - no winch, endless air; REAR - Kamar rear bar, dual 33in wheels, 170L tank, cargo barrier and shelf.

The supplier selected 850 FRONT and 863 REAR spings for my vehicle, it now sits around 2in higher at rear and 1in higher at front without any fuel and vehicle completely empty. by just adding the two spares the vehicle drops 1in and sits even - i'm now worried that fully packed with roof rack, fuel etc it will sag in the rear.

I am thinking that with the same spring rate (i.e kg rating) and a '4in' lift the vehicle the 80 would sit around 3in higher than original. This would be my preference to bring the guards off the 33in tyres a bit. The other alternative is to install the 851 front and 864 rear springs which would reduce the sag.

I reckon i'd prefer the 4in option because the 2 in option would result in a much harder ride (especially when empty) and less articulation capability.

The supplier has led me to believe that the 4in lift would not be possible without installing a plate kit, extended brake lines and panhard bar extensions - could anyone who had done a 4in lift in an 80 series comment on what modifications they have needed?

I'm also interested in any comments for the 850/851 and 863/864 springs.

I have the same spring combo on mine (petrol 4.5) however I have LPG and single Kaymar carrier on the back. With Dual wheels and Kaymar rear step at the back and 170l tank I think you should have gone with 864's.
I think the 863's are for 200kg load and 864's 300kg or something similar.
As for harder ride, I think the 864's when unladen would be harsher than 863's. Mine has barely any load in the back and with 863's it's a little harsher than original. But, when loaded up it's so soft and comfortable it almost puts you to sleep!

Thanks rob, I'm led to believe that the 863's are 250kg and the 364's are 400kg. The supplier selected the springs, but i should be able to swap them for the 364's - have not driven the vehicle yet. Twigiee

Hi

Your Supplier is correct about the extra gear, but I am sure someone will tell you different. I have a 5'' lift on springs and I had to end up putting adjustable lower control arms to push the rear axle back 8mm to stop the rear springs from popping out. Also you shocks will have to change for the extra travel.
If I was in your place I would look at air bags for the times you are fully loaded, I have them and they are great, just remember to back them off on corrugation.

The only reason i'm not keen on the air bags is I believe that they reduce articulation capability. Maybe i should get a set of 364's and just install them for major trips - not too much trouble to install.

Hi

I do a lot of playing and with the bags set at 5psi I can completely compress my spring which means full articulation. They are a mongrel to install with a 5" lift as I have to nearly lift it a meter to get the springs out.

I think the supplier will be correct,

A 4inch lift will require an adjustable panhard (to centre axle under vehicle, mine was out), and extended brake lines. You may also require the adapter for the rear brake bias fittings and extended mounts for the sway bars, mine were just touching axle under articulation. You are right in thinking that the extra height will improve the static level of the vehicle, but don't forget about 'droop' which may be too much for the shocks you have fitted, I had the long travel Nitrochargers fitted and these seem to be suitable.
