yer I thought of the Murray but not coming from a family with a shack etc I don't have any local knowledge. The drives I have done around the river have been very frustrating. You can see the dirt track and a perfect camp site but it is fenced off as it's on private land.

There is free camping on the eastern bank of the Murray at Mannum. Cross the ferry turn left a few hundred metres.

Kuitpo Forest and Mt Crawford forests have camp areas, fires from May to November and allow dogs - both within an hour of Adelaide.

If you cross the ferry at Morgan and turn left, once beyond the shacks you can camp to your hearts content opposite the SA Water pumping station.

There is also a place called castles landing about 6k from blanchtown, on private land but great spot, costs $7 a day. Has over a k of river frontage. No facilities.

We have camped a couple times on an old stock route, near Kulpara, near Kadina.
great winter camp spot with plenty of fire wood. The local nosey farmer will probably come along but he is harmless.

Cheers Pesty

Agree with Castles Landing.

Also, try Cordola Station. It's on the western (Adelaide side) bank of the Murray a few km south of Morgan on the road to Blanchetown. The road starts as bitumen, but turns to dirt. Just before it does is the turnoff. Go down the road for a couple of km, then enter the gate on the right. Put your $10/night (I think) in the honesty tin. Camp on the river bank, or near the lagoon, or somewhere in between.
BYO wood, there's none left there. There's no dunnies either.
