Theo from Birdsville can drive his cruiser twice as fast as anyone else out there - he went flying past us last year - turns out there was an abandoned camper near Poeppels that was free for the taking :-))

I have been lucky enough to have a catastrophic vehicle failure in the simpson and had to partake of the Birdsville Desert Rescue service.

The car was retrieved on a trailer, on the way back the towing vehicle ran out of fuel so we siphoned some from my car, the guy towing said "I didnt think I had enough petrol but I was hoping you drove a petrol"

$3200 for the retrieval. Then the cost of shipping the car to Brisbane for repairs (they couldnt do it in Birdsville) Then repiars in Brisbane etc etc a very expensive trip. Add to that the fact that somewhere in transit someone broke into the car and took my tools, jack, fishing gear, compressor etc, of course no one would claim responsibility.

3 days waiting for a rescue in the middle of the Simpson was not fun, but passing adventurers were all great, we had plenty of water and supplies but everyone that passed by offered to share what they had if we needed it.

We even had a group setup camp for the night about a km up the track and then come and invite us for a diner that night, they picked us up and drove us home.

What a fun hobby we have
Cheers

About 5 years ago, we came across a Troopie near the gum tree who had a siezed rear wheel bearing on his troopie. One of the people in our group carried a spare, so we replaced it for him, and he cancelled the retrieval he was organising. He then tried to bargain us down on the price of the wheel bearings (we charged him Adelaide price)................some people have a hide.

Groove,

I assume you invoiced the BDRS a suitably exhorbitant sum for the fuel they took from you.

They would would only give me credit at the service station to the value of the fuel used, kind of funny given that I didnt have a running car at the time.

Cant really complain though what choice did I have, If you put yourself in these situations you have to take the good with the bad or stay home.

And yes Richard the thought did cross my mind about the thing burning to the ground.

Anyway my memeory of the experience was a very positive one because of the attitude and friendliness of the other travellers.
Cheers
