Does anyone know what these bars would have been used for, they are on what seems to be the very old Great Northern Hwy 350m West of the New Hwy 90klm South of the Capricorn Roadhouse which is just South of Newman, There is also 4 old concrete pads lined up like this I I I I the pads look like they might have had a building on them , they can be seen in the bottom photo

Doug ,
You know in the old days they had those canvas A frame tents . Maybe these rails were fror holding down the sides because the tents were erected for a long period of time during some sort of construction .

willie you beat me to it, I was going to say the same. Back in 1989 we were up that way and came across a road camp and they had big tarps erected just like that, the ones with the concrete on them would be the uprights for the ridge pole.

willie could be onto something.
there are some strange metal "rails" in the picnic areas on the way to exmouth.
i think a lot of the roads were built using as much local materials as possible to save trucking it in. there would have been semi-permanant construction camps for this purpose i suppose.
the ones up the brand hwy look like they are made from old train rails.

Doug,
Are there any exploration drill sites nearby?

The bars could have been used for a drill rod or casing stockpile to keep them out of the dirt.

Looking at the OziExplorer map, the Yarraloola to Kalgoorlie Underground Gas pipeline runs close to the Highway and at around 100km south of Capricorn Road house it actually crosses the highway. So I suspect it could be something to do with this

MMMM. The pipes don't look like they were made to carry a load. If being used to hold drilling pipes etc, more would be needed to hold up the weight as well as stop them rolling off.

I think there may have been a donga there at some stage, and these pipes acted like a bollard, stopping any vehicles getting too close. maybe?

NO. having a second look I think they were to stop cable drums from rolling.

The concrete pads? for power equipment for associated works..generators maybe!

Gday Doug
Now after being in the military manymany years ago......they are the ridge support for the fly part of the tent. The second ridge pole has sunk below ground level, so if you have a bit of a dig................................

Gentlemen, I know what they are. They are in evidence in other parts of the NT as well. My Father who was a WWII flying ace (actually he was an armorer) tells me that they are tie downs for aircraft. I was looking for the pics I have of exarary the same things at RAAF Fenton. Many operated from gravel strips alongside roads all over the northern half of the continent. Next time you have a question of this nature please just ask without all the smart rectum gibes....LOL LOL....
By the way how many of you know that the original boiler of the Mary Anne is now in the Museum and the one in the park is a FAKE?????

A friend of mine and myself were wondering how to get people interested in a group of objects that have actually no purpose what so ever. Took us forever to find them and install where you see...Some of the answers are good but NOT the TRUTH...

Looks like it worked .....

Grrr!!!
