Hi travellers
Has anyone returned from the Simpson recently. We want to travel from Dalhousie to Birdsville starting about the 20th May. Exploroz track notes tell us that we cannot cross Eyre Creek. Is this correct?

You need to take the bypass track at Eyre Creek, so factor in an extra 60km. The bypass is a great detour - camping up at Goonamillera waterhole is nice, and you don't often get this opportunity.

Current info is here:

Totally agree Phil,

On our trip to Gawler Ranges, we done a run up to Lake Gairdner and it was well worth the drive to see it with water in it.. Its great to see all these places on different occassions, some times bone dry and others flooded..

We crossed Simpson 2 weeks ago. Reports at the time were that Eyre Crk was closed but as per Phil advice, the detour was available 30km upstream and has good rocky bottom where you cross - water was about 0.5-0.6m deep and moving quite quickly. At the QAA line the creek looked a good 2m deep but hard to tell. In addition to desert parks bulletin ring rangers to get accurate info just before you go (as Phil advised us before we went).

Sure enough we arrived at DAlhousie only to be told you cant cross the Eyre Crk - complete rubbish, but panicked us a bit still - so be careful who's advice you listen too. We had a fabulous trip and I hope you do too. JD

Certainly do need the latest info on the depth of water especially coming from the Dalhousie side. If it is too deep/wide to cross it is quite possible you wouldn't have the fuel to get back again as you'd have completed over 90% of the distance. If its .6m deep & raining in the catchment I don't think I'd be crossing, not without enough time & fuel to do the trip twice anyway. In flood, I'm led to believe the Eyre creek can be up to 5 km wide.
Cheers Craig...........
