Hi guys

A friend of mine has just built a house in Gembrook,he has a hilux and a rec reg motorbike....
Last weekend he spent the weekend riding the hills around his home to Noojee etc etc...

Now we got onto the subject of track closures, people ripping up the bush etc etc...He said he was appalled at the number of 4x4 drivers that were doing the wrong thing up their including, spreading/driving the stone (piles) around that parks are going to use, pulling out of the poles where parks had placed to stop people and he said there were a lot of new tracks being made that dont need to be there, but guys just decide to go stuff it lets see if we can get here or there... I said look, its only a small percentage of 4x4 and he said yeah right its about 50% he noticed doing the wrong thing...

I know this guy respects the bush, known him all my life and does a lot of trout fishing !

Not saying motorcycles are much better either !

any thoughts

my thoughts are that this guy is inside himself to say that 50% of 4x4 drivers are irresponsible.

Hi

It could be true that 50% of the 4WDers that he sees are doing stupid things, but who says he sees all 4WDers that go there. Seems to me only the badones get noticed. The rest of us who Tread Lightly (or whatever it is now) don't get noticed doing the right thing so we aren't counted.

Sort of like when I worked in a city Emergency Dept - it would be easy to think all teenagers are drug users or petrol heads 'cos that was all we saw. The other 90% didn't get noticed!

Cheers

As you mentioned it is a few that wreck it for everyone else, but we all get the blame. Lookout Scrubby will be around soon

Apparently this has been an ongoing problem for some time around Gembrook & yes in that area it apprears it's far closer to 50% than 5% that are flouting the laws. Unfortunately Parks are suggesting mass track closures along with a Police presence to put an end to it.
I fear only when bikes & cars are confiscated under the hoon laws backed up with some hefty fines will people stop & think. Lets hope it doesn't go that far.

The problem is that it is the clost place to the eastern suburbs to go 4wding, so you get all the bleep s who are just there to go hard and get the car covered in mud. I seen one guy out there in a brand new Triton asking me if I knew where some good tracks are, he didn't even have a map or any recovery gear. I got the impression that it was a company car and he thought he would try it out seeing as it was 4WD, but he had no idea of what he was doing. Young kids in the back as well.

Whats been happening is the Parks are reducing the 4wding resource and have also failed in over thirty years to put in place a single area where people can go and play despite specific legislation allowing for same.

Recently - 4wd victoria was even knocked backed on a training ground at Hoddles creek, they had Parks support but where told is was not an acceptable use of the land.

So with less places to go, the small idiot minority common to all groups becomes more noticeable.

Its not just over in the East, here in the West they have their fair share of 4WD cowboys, watched this hoon probably in his mid 30's ripp'in up the beach in Cape Range National Park, near a campsite called Boat Harbour, being a local I dont look forward to this time of the year when we get invaded by tourist.

I would hardly call Gembrook the bush. It is an outer suburb of Melbourne

The forest is cut up by POWER LINES and FORESTRY TRACKS and frequented by bull dozers, heavy haulage trucks and government 4x4's...as well as some people wishing to see the place and the odd idiot behind the wheel of a 4x4.

Generalising about 4x4 drivers not respecting the bush is a tad mischievous.

Your mate may go to church twice on a Sunday and be a genuine bloke in your eyes but where does he get his figures from. Sounds more like a couple of wags crapping on over a few beers to me. :-)

Cheers

And lets not forget that Puffing Billy has sometimes 2 trains a day to Gembrook and all that smoke and cinders has to go somewhere, then of course there are thousands of enthusiasts tramping down the grass to take photgraphs as well as queueing at the Gembrook Tea Rooms.... Naaaaaaaaa I think 4x4's are doing little damage compared with that lot....

From the reports I'm hearing on several fronts I don't believe that in this particular case they are "Generalising" about either the numbers of bikes & 4x4's nor the amount of damage being done in the Gembrook forest. Following an article & maps of the area being printed in a popular bike magazine, large numbers of people started riding in the area, many unregistered with numerous new ridgeline & short cut tracks appearing. This has been followed by a steady stream of 4x4's with tracks cut up, barriers & signs removed.
The area has been the subject of much discussion lately at 4 Wheel Drive Victoria meetings on how best the damage can be stopped before wide spread track closures occur. Several community meetings have taken place as the locals have pretty much had enough of the 50 to 100 rev heads each weekend that decend around their homes. It doesn't really matter what other users of the bush are doing, it is simply unsustainable for the 4x4s & bikes to break the law & wreck the bush like is being done here. It can only lead to track closures like NSW have & we don't want that.
In this area the "Odd Idiot" appears to be in plentiful supply.
Cheers Craig............

I heardf of a great solution to the cowboys a while a go. Near my place the main pipeline runs into the city (Melbourne), through the Mt Evelyn/ Mooroolbark area. After a few weekends of 18 yr olds pulling up the fence and tearing along the pipe track, one old guy had a gutful of them and took action.....
Once said morons had pulled up the steel pipe fence to get onto the reserve, out comes old bloke with a bucket of water and some quick set concrete.....
A while later Mooroolbark police just had to wait at both ends of that part of the track.
Never saw those brainiacs again.....

Before it turns into a bunfight, what Wafer & Crackles have said is perfectly true. Unfortunately, a number of 4wders do not want to get their heads out of the sand.

I have been going 4wding for many yrs, not always as a driver, & have found that in the last 3 years the responsible 4wders are now in the MINORITY, especially in places close to Melb, such as Gembrook, Toolangi etc. Yes, I'm sure we have all done something that is outside the 'tread lightly' principles; actually if we followed the policy as it is written, we wouldnt go out 4wding all that often..lol.

Drivers doing donuts in the mud & at camping grounds, driving closed tracks, driving at warp factor on access rds such as Marginal etc, the list goes on & it is almost the norm now, not isolated incidents anymore.

I gather Crackles has some dealings with the association, so hopefully a few will take note of what he has said in earlier posts, but unfortunately many will say he, Wafer's mate & myself are talking crap, but dont go whinging when more areas get closed because of inappropriate behaviour by both 4wders & bike riders.

Cheers
