Hi everybody, Does anybody know if you can use the small(about 200mm, AE4001 I think) rubber GME antenna on on the AE4018K1 elevated feed base without hurting the radio? I know the Polars come with the small one but the GME doesn't.

It'll be okay, Bozo, just wont have the gain of longer aerials.

Bozo.
The 1/4 wave whip you refer to will work fine and can highly recommend keeping one in the glove box as a spare.
My AE4018k1 is 3 years old and never failed but have assisted other club members when their wire whips failed on corrigated roads.
Cheers Bob.

Thanks for the help guys, I am looking at putting the antenna on a gutter mount so the smaller whip would be real handy.

Bozo.
Most gutter mounts are cast alloy and I believe the AE4018k1 with its heavy duty spring will be too heavy and cause the mount to fail. If you are starting from scratch the AE4017K2 with the 1/4 wave whip would be better.
We sell and install comms equipment and would only use the heavier unit on a solid bull bar mount.
The reason I like the AE4018k1 on the Bullbar is that it is rugged and does not flop about, I can honestly say that I do not notice its there, If it moved a lot it would drive me nuts.
Cheers Bob

Thanks Bob, I decided to go with the bullbar mount. I already had bought the K1 and went with the bullbar because even with the 1/4 wave on I wouldn't get into the carpark of my local shopping centre! I take your point about the strength of the gutter mount, thanks for the advice.
