No photo's to hand but if out there and it rains just find a high sandy spot and camp until it has stopped raining, preferably don't travel for at least 24 hours after rain to give the track a chance to dry out a bit.
Don't camp in the swales as they are usually clay and very boggy as well as being the lowest point and prone to ponding.
Travelling across the clayed roads when wet just cuts them up and makes it harder later on, stick to the sand tracks like WAA and French line and avoid all claypans and salt lakes/pans.

Laura, Birdsville hd 2.6mm rain yesterday and still cloudy. I have some wonderful photos of the Simpson Desert in flood in 1998 taken by John Watkins from SA National Parks from a plane. Unfortunately they are in Birdsville and not scanned (yet).

Dozer, we're not going to Innamincka this trip - but the yabbies are running in Birdsville and then we're going after the yellow belly - don't want a water rat though.

Hi Ruth, no unfortunately we aren't going to Birdsville this trip, we were planning on it but with only 2 weeks from Adelaide, with 2 families each with 2 kids 3 or under, and our travelling companions' first camping trip away as a family, we decided not to push the travel to hard each day and go only as far as Inamincka. I was looking forward to seeing Birdsville though, staying in the famous camp ground, and meeting the famous 'Ruth' :). That may have to happen in 2 years time when we attempt the Simpson. Next year is Tassie for 4 weeks in November.

I would imagine the fishing/yabbys would be running well at Inamincka if they were running well at Birdsville - it seems that a bit of flow is what gets them going - and it seems we will have a decent flow in a months time still - maybe even too much if the rain continues further up north!

Bye for now

D-Jack

G-Jack, the infamous 'Ruth' hasn't been in Birdsville since November 06 - they've gone on a big holiday. New people there now. Tassie is a beautiful place to visit. Think you made a good choice on your trip with only two weeks. Did you see Garbutt's report below about the 2 inches. The yabbies really like the water flowing but they also seem to like it cold as well. Have a good holiday - we'll be poking around Birdsville (cleaning up our house and yard) and in the Simpson visiting our favourite places again. We'll be there in two years when you do your visit as well! b We won't be hard to find. Ha ha.

We had a little rain over the last few days, but nothing to hold anybody up (aside from a 2WD). The Birdsville Track was the worst affected out of Birdsville, and traffic flow has continued.

There could be a little more rain over the next few days, and if there is any change, here's where you'll find out (no doubt). The little rain that we are having should make desert driving easier. I'm not sure about the western side, but I'm sure Mt. Dare will keep us updated on here.

Although the Diamantina has dried up, there is alot of healthy vegetation, and the flowers should be superb this season.

Birdsville had a great rodeo over the weekend, with plenty of tourists and country folk having a great time.

For anybody interested, the Birdsville caravan park is now being managed by a lovely couple, Cath and Geoff. They're keen to look after you all on your next trip to Birdsville.

Don't forget to drop in and say hi at the Big Red Cafe, either.

Safe journeys all.

Birdsville in Flood - 1998/99

Stop Sign in Birdsville Flood 98/99

There are loads of pelicans at the moment

Wolfgang's faithful bluey enjoying the conditions

Big Red with wild flowers - there is now water in lake Nappanerica (where the flowers in the photo are). This is only the second time in the last fifty years that this has been seen.

This dust storm last January (which I'm sure you've all seen), was followed by some rain, making quite a mess!
