I need help & ideas in finding frinds who will be somewhere between Broken Hill & Alice Springs. They have just had a death in the family I are not answering their mobile.
I am in the process of getting their rego info to contact police, BUT do you know of any other means I can use ?

is it channell 5 on a UHF that is picked up by the repeaters and tx'd everywhere?

also, if you get on a ham radio oretator, they may help to make the calls

No its not Channel 5 that is picked up by the repeaters and tx'd everywhere?
That system is only availlable within an area covered by a repeater [ maybe]or a human monitor, if you relied on UHF in a life and death situation, be prepared to die.
There is only one sure way to get a message to people in the remote outback by radio and that's VKS-737 , and even then the other party must have the radio on and listening,
If you call this number and give head office the details they will put out the call and that's all they can ,
To post a message to an authorised user:

Telephone (08) 8287 6220
Follow the prompts. Note that you will be asked for...........
The user's name (given and family name)
The user's callsign (such as Sierra 5291)
A general location for the user if known
Your name
Your phone number (we may need to get back to you).
The message !
You have approximately 1 minute for the recording.

Thanks Doug,
Have spoken to VKS & placed the message. SA Police also have all details, so it's a case of sitting back & waiting.
The part that annoys me is I was only called this morning as there children have been SMSing on the mobile since Tuesday morning. When will people learn that Mobiles DO NOT work outside of builtup areas.
That's why I have the HF

Hi Vince,
Sorry to hear of your predicament, must be heart wrenching.

Other than the good reponses above I can only add if they are on the blacktop find a large trucking company who freights between Adel, Alice and Dar.

Call them and maybe they can radio/phone their drivers who then can radio other drivers to keep a lookout for your friends. (Snowball effect)

Your friends will need to refuel or stop somewhere so chances should be good.

Good luck.

Regards
Alan

Vince,

I am afraid that trying to contact someone without a definite direct contact will always be a bit of a hit and miss, and will require a degree of patience.

What Doug has suggested and the Police probably provide the best options.

The other thing which might work, if you know the route they were going to take, is leaving a message with outback pubs and roadhouses. Most of the towns out there are fairly small and most people would be willing to help. It might mean 20 or 30 phone calls but it may just help.

Oh and keep sending SMS when they eventually get ot an area with coverage their phones will beep like mad. SMS will get them eventually.

Gday,
Im in Alice and just spoke to a mate who is a cop here.
You need to contact the police in the state where the person died and ask them to confirm it and fax Alice Springs police so they can put the word out.

Sorry but they need to have it confirmed before they can do anything as strange things have happened with arguing couples etc in the past. Good luck.
Ive printed the details and put them in my car anyway.
Cheers

Suggest you contact ABC Radio, they have the means to broadcast such message nation wide. The people in question may not necessarily hear it but I bet plenty of other travellers will and hopefully make contact with them.
