I am trying to put all my ecw files in a file called map , but I have found two with the same name :
250.ecw 2.8 GB
250.ecw 685 MB
I cannot put them in the same file without changing the name of one of them and I think that would be a disaster .
How have I managed to get myself in this position and how do I solve the problem ?
Thanks ,
Willie .

Hi Willie, at first glance it looks like your knickers are in a knot :))
However AFAIK there are 2 parts to the system, a map file (header) and the actual ecw(graphics) file. So, as long as you can change the appropriate map file to refer to the appropriately named ecw file, it should be ok to change things a tad.
At least thats what I think..as usual I could be wrong, but worth a try if you don't want to suffer those knotted knickers..make backup copies first of course. :))

Not such a disaster Willie, if you know which .map file belongs to which .ecw file.
If so, decide which .ecw file you're going to rename, and use windows explorer to do so.
Open the corresponding .map file (do so from windows explorer, so it will open as a text file in the notepad, not while in ozi).
The third line of this file denotes the path & name of the .ecw file it relates to. Alter to match the recently renamed .ecw file.
I get the impression you've got a reasonable computer knowledge, so I have been fairly brief in the description. If you want further info, or I don't make sense, sing out!

Willie
2.8 GB sounds like it has them all (national Raster maps) in it.
685 Mb seems too small.
Open each from their "current location" and see what they are???
and make your move based on that info.
I am not sure what a renaming will do, but you select what files you want to import into the program and I don't see what a re-naming will do to that facility as long as you select the relevant folder to import.

Good point Patrol,
Natmap 2005 premium 1:250k mosiac is close to 2.8gb.
What is the other 685mb file?
Willie,
check and you may not need it if it is a lower resolution of the same map.

"What is the other 685mb file?"
That would be the first version of Raster Mosaic. Its what I run.
Willie has got two versions of raster mosaic on his HDD. Needs to press the delete button on the one he doesn't want.

The filename shouldn't matter as it is the header metadata that has the important info and of this only the geopositioning data is really important. I've changed names to more meaningful stuff without a problem but haven't used OziExplorer only other software. If you're interested in what's in the header you can look at it with a "header editor".

Yes, your suggestion will work if Willie renames one of the ecw files and them re-imports it into OziExplorer. OziExplorer creates its own calibration file (called a map file *.map) from the ecw header data ...and uses the file name to identify the file to open. Its does however appear that Willie has two versions of the same map. As others have suggested deleting one (the smaller, lower resolution one ) is probabaly the best option.
Cheers

Hi Greg ,
I have made a copy on an external hard drive and deleted it from the HD on the computer . I will now open Ozi and see if it all still works !
I have another query :
indexmap.ecw (1920 KB ) is in the program file . Should this be moved to the same area as all the other ecw files , or left where it is ?
Thanks ,
Willie

Depends "where it is". OziExplorer creates a sub-directory called "Index Maps" in the OziExplorer directory where it looks by default. If you only use it as an index map may as
well leave it/put it here. There is however no reason why it has to be here as you can use any calibrated map as an index map..its just a case of specifying its location when you go to load it. If it is more convenient for you, put it wherever you like.
Cheers

Greg ,
Sorry to keep bugging you .
The Natmap 250k mosaic. map is opening with either of the ewc files I mentioned above . So I guess now I must somehow find out what else is in the big one , and get rid of it if I can . How can I find out if there is stuff in it I need ?
Also , I cannot open " Natmap Landsat 7 Mosaic.map "
when I try , I get this message "The image type .MAP is not supported in this version" Do you have any ideas how I have buggered this up ? It used to work !
Thanks ,
Willie .

Willie - Sorry for late reply - actually had to go do some work - bugger - lucky it was just walking around in the bush! Anyway...as you know it is often difficult to sort things out when your not there on
the spot..but here it goes..
In relation to your first question - the bigger map (ie larger file size) is just an updated version of the smaller one created at a higher resolution (hence larger file size). The majority of the larger map will be identical to the smaller one with respect to roads/tracks etc....with relatively small changes (eg new roads) in some areas. Which one you decide to keep is dependant on how much memory you have - keep the bigger flasher one if you can...though the smaller one will probably be Ok to use (ie accuarte enough detail) 99% of the time.
Second question - What program are you using to open the image? Doesnt sound like an error message you would get in OziExplorer. Whatever you are using/doing it sounds like its trying to open the Natmap Landsat 7 Mosaic.map file (which is the calibration file - text) and not the actual image itself (which should be Natmap Landsat 7 Mosaic.ecw). Are you trying to open the image from within OziExplorer or just by clicking on the *.map file in Windows Explorer?
Cheers

As i hit the Submit button I realised that the program won't be able to read the file with a dot there
