OK, by now some of you must have taken delivery of your new Toyota V8 diesel (wagon, cab chassis etc). Mine is not due for another two weeks.

Anyone able to give first impressions?

What's it like with the manual gearbox? Is 5th gear still too high? (compared to slushboxes).

Is there sufficient room under the bonnet for another battery, heat exchanger shower etc?

Come on. Give us the low down.

Can't help you directly but you might try calling Out of Town 4WD at Barnsley near Newcastle (makers of Long Ranger Tanks). They had two troopies and a station wagon (looks like a 60 series with a bonnet air intake) there a couple of weeks ago. Apparently they were preparing them for the trip from Darwin to Broome for those who had won places on the Toyota competition

A recent post by Ruth (ex B'ville caravan park) gave her impressions of her other half's new V8. Something to the effect that she couldnt catch him on the way home :))))

Yes there's room for a 2nd battery & a shower(not sure how they plumb in). The motor has so much torque that it pulls 5th gear from 40kph so I couldn't imagine it would be "too high."
Impressions..................You asked.....
Hope you're not getting the Wagon as it was certainly a big dissapointment to me when I had a close look.
100mm track difference front to rear. If you get an offroad trailer do you match it's track to the front or rear wheels of the car?? It's got to sustain more tyre damage off road & certainly wouldn't help in soft sand or mud.
Rear leaf springs shorter than on the Tray & Troopy. (Would have rougher ride & limit wheel travel)
Diffs appear not to be upgraded despite issues in previous model.
1984 dash board with tacky add on idle up & locker switches & a centre console which appears to come from Supacheap.
90L fuel tank. Not since 1989 have Toyota had such a small tank in a wagon.
Wagon section is off an old 70 series Prado so less packing space.
With the great advances in their new motor & the upgrade in the gearbox to take the extra power, it was dissapointing that the rest is just a mismatched bunch of old bits out of the Toyota parts bin. And with the premium price they've tacked on for diff locks & air, take it over $60k for a new 4x4 with uncomfortable seats & a finish not unlike my old 84 Hilux. Concidering this vehicle is supposed to replace the old 105 standard Crusier it doesn't come close let alone improve on it. (other than the engine & standard snorkel)

Craig, agree with everything you said above. Especially about the wagon - it was produced for a special market apparently, mining industry - still don't understand why it doesn't have extra fuel tank tho. Hopefully, the next wagon will be MUCH better. And definitely correct about the torque - very good. Notice on door about use of diff locks - DO NOT go above 8 klm/h when in use!

Ruth it will be interesting to see how the diff reliabilty goes particually in light of the 8kph warning sticker you mention. If that's not used to avoid warrenty I'll eat my hat. I can just see it now. Question 1. "Sir what speed were you travelling at when it blew???" Not that low speeds will stop them blowing. 3 of mine were done at under 10 kph anyway.
As montana mentions below, one may need to be a little careful of the gearbox & clutch with all that power when loaded up. Although it does pull 5th gear from almost any speed & will certainly hold top when towing over big hills, not dropping back will put a lot of strain on the transmission particually overdrive.
I must say having previously owned a troopy, a base 80 & an RV 100, I thought that this wagon would have been aimed right at me as a family tourer. I was wrong!
Despite being ready to upgrade with cash in hand I bite my tongue as I say "I'm now waiting to see what motor upgrade Nissan come up with" :-(
Still looking forward to the Cruiser tray at work being replaced though. Should be a good towing race between it & the F250 :-)
Cheers Craig............

95/100mm difference in track, surely Toyota has made a typo?

Well the typo keeps getting repeated if that's the case. Out of their brochure:
- Front Track. mm. :Cab Chassis/Wagon 1515 Work Mate. 1555 GX, GXL.
- Rear Track. mm. :Cab Chassis/Wagon 1420 Work mate. 1460 GXL.
That's 95mm difference or 1/4 of the width of the rear tyres don't follow in the footprint of the front. How that effects anything time will tell.
The rear axle must be narrow though as the rear cargo area is relitivly small. Between the wheel arches 100mm narrower, rear seat to the back door 150mm shorter & the door opening height the same as an 80 series. Similar packing dimentions I'd guess to a 90 series Prado. (Not quite the 4 door V8 Troopy leaked out initially)
Cheers Craig...........

Craig

would you not think "DO NOT go above 8 klm/h when in use" maybe there for safety reasons not a way of getting out of Warranty?

Richard

Possibly right Richard but if it was such a safety issue I think we'd see the warning from alot of other locker & vehicle companys. ARB for example have no maximum speed in their opperating manual yet the majority of people with lockers fitted would often have them engaged at well over 8kph. Sand, slippery hills or mud may all need a higher speed to carry some momenteum. I suppose if its a safety issue & nothing to do with the power of the new V8 then the same sticker would be on a 100 series with factory lockers as well.
Cheers Craig..........

Would be interesting to know if anyone has fuel consumption figures yet (not the sticker numbers) and also RPM indicated in 5th at 100 kph.

RPM 2000 at 100 klm/h in 5th gear. Don't have any fuel figures yet. We were comparing RPM all the way home as I was in the LC100 and my RPM was higher. That was on Tuesday and he's been too busy making the canopy and wetting it's 'head' to take it for a bigger run. He's going up the Sunshine Coat this weekend to see his dear old Mum and will give it a trial then.

Thanks Ruth, I've just done that. Congrats on your new purchase. I'm also glad you've posted rpm figures. My 80 does 2400rpm in 5th at 100k's and I'm glad the revs are lower in the new one. Should be good for consumption.

How's the Sunshine Coast these days. My second favourite place in OZ is Montville in the hinterland (how come no other states have hinterland?). I'm in Mandurah in WA. Beaut place. I'm trying to convince her indoors that Montville is the place to retire to but, judging by the prices, a lot of other people have decided that too.
