A couple of months ago I unblocked the EGR on my Patrol when I noticed high Exhaust Gas Temps (EGT's) at certain throttle settings. Since doing this when I start up and drive off when the vehicle has been sitting for longer than 10minutes, as I accelerate a pulsating whistle like a umpires whistle just not as loud comes from the engine bay and increases with boost pressure until the turbo drops in to the second boost setting. As a trial I re-blocked the EGR at the inlet manifold and it does not do it anymore. I suspect I have an EGR valve that is on the way out, is there anything else it could be that I may have missed?
Thanks in Advance
Snowy

Snowy, check out the pipe that goes to the inlet manifold. It is the alloy pipe that bolts on the after side of the EGR valve.
Mine whistled & found that the pipe was warped where it flanges on. I've got a bloke from nissan that does a bit of work on the side & he filed it down for me, so it was flat again. Appparently its a common thing to happen as is the airflow sensor & EGR valve to pack it in. What i did to fix all the problems is, i had a sheet of stainless, to which i dropped out the gasket from the alloy pipe, then traced a new gasket without the whole a put that in to blank it all off. That was more than a year ago now & no probs with any of it again. The other thought i had was to go to a muffler place an get them to bend me up a pipe that wasn't made of alloy, but seeings i had the stainless it only took me about 1/2 hr.......
Good luck
Dan

Yes I have blocked off the EGR pipe where it goes in to the inlet manifold. I noticed that at highways speeds though that the boost pressure dropped to less than 5psi, when I did a bit of research on this a lot of people on this
forum and the Nissan Patrol
forum had the same experience and also had high EGT's when the boost dropped which can lead to engine damage. When I unblocked it, it started whistling when I first start-up and take off. The inital whistle does not bother me, I just want to make sure something isn't about to fail.

Well after speaking to a couple of diesel specialists in
Adelaide they both said the same thing, the EGR/Inlet manifold gasket is probably buggered (why do I often overlook the simple things?), if replacing that does not work then I will probably need a new EGR as the plunger in that may be gone. I will try it out and post here again when I know the result, thanks for your help guys.
