Today at work we went to change the clutch in my brothers Patrol when we found out we have to pull the bloody whole motor out just to do it. (NOT KIDDING) even the workshop manual says so. What a bloody joke. You would think that Mr Nissan would make these things a bit more user friendly wouldn't you??

Undid all the bolts and nuts to remove the gear box and found that the bellhousing will not go back far enough as it hits on the fire wall.

Has anyone changed a clutch in one of these before and what are we up against.

Is there an easier way???

Cheers Luke

Someone on here was on about that, a few months ago with a GQ , might pay to do a search, from what i remember there is a way of turning the box to get it out.

Not much help i know, but hope all goes well.

Axle.

GQ 4.2lt box comes out easy(especially when someone else is doing the job...lol).

BUT you need a vehicle hoist and a gearbox stand. Yes the gearbox is turned as it pops out. It is also probably the heaviest gearbox around.

The 3 lt box is different, methinks

Got a funny feeling that Luke is referring to a GQ with an RB30 engine. Not sure though.
The GU's gearbox certainly should be able to be pulled (dropped??? OUCH) out without the need to remove the donk.

Sorry blokes.....my mistake. (I thought you blokes, Borgy, Shane and Luke, would have shown him the error of his ways by now and convinced to get a 4.2...hahaha

Strewth, I'm glad you blokes have plenty of upper body strength; cos the gearboxes in these 'trols are as heavy as Bill Gate's wallet!!!!

Good luck!!

Pull the transfer case off the box.
Remove the exhaust at the turbo.
Remove the drivers side engine mount and you can get the box back far enough to remove the clutch and pressure plate. The box will then drop down. Remove the flywheel and throw it at your nearest enemy and replace it with an exedy solid flywheel conversion.
It is a bit challenging but you can do it. We do them in a day in our workshop but thats with the correct lifting gear. If doing it at home, best of luck as they are heavy and hard to twist when you are lifting them. We use a seat belt strap on a crane through the door as the strap allows the box to twist a bit easier.
Hope this helps

G'day Luke
I've removed several of them with the correct gear, ie. heavy duty transmission jack, the box needs to be turned 45 degrees to the right as it comes out otherwise the starter motor locater in the bell housing will foul on the body. As others have said it is a very heavy and awkward box to remove.
