We will be travelling to Cape York, leaving Brisbane 9th June. Just wondering if anyone recently returned has road reports. Have noted Chili Beach road is closed and Telegraph track?
Any info appreciated.

Wayne & Cheryl (QLD)

The following roads are closed to all vehicles.
The Burke Developmental Road, from Walkers Creek, to the boundary of the Carpentaria and Mareeba Shires via Dunbar Station. The Burke Developmental Road, from Dunbar to Maggieville and Normanton.

High clearance 4WD's are needed for most other roads on the penninsular.

Any other restrictions in the Cape Area are for load limits IE road trains and heavy trucks etc.

For confirmation of this info see the link below.

We are only going by the road conditions reports listed on this website. Update as at 13th May. Check it out. We would like some feedback from someone who has just returned so we are not flying dark, with a group including kids.

Sorry guys they were all accurate most of those roads were closed till now just so people didn't get into trouble everything has dried out enough to get people through I talked to people that have been through to virilya point and also to chilli beach and the roads are good as for the telegraph track it should be good by next week a couple of people have been through with a bit of trouble the batavia shortcut is passable but you might have a little bit of trouble with a camper or trailer theres one tight bit that avoids a big hole in the ground. cheers hope that helps I have updated all the road conditions also so check them out thanks guys see you on the road.

Thanks Sam.
We will be travelling with three camper trailers. one vehicle without. Don't want to venture where fools...........! We were up there in 2005 but it had been a pretty dry year, and we were a lot later in the season. We want to make sure where we are going is possible with road conditions, rather than getting into strife, or back tracking, especially considering we don't have a long time due to holiday restrictions for some of us. Want to make the most of it all.

In another couple of weeks or even less all the roads will be fine to get through the main road is the best it's been in 25 years so everyone says so don't worry to much about getting somewhere you want to go just enjoy you're trip.

Hi Sam. Hope to get to Weipa and here it is possible to include it in a trip of 16 -18 days. Do you know a Grant Crossley who lives in Weipa (is a distant relative- I called in on his mum in Cairns today)?

Hi Sam
With the recent rain up there how are the roads looking now? Is it likely that we can do much of the OTL with our camper trailers? I see Chili Beach road closed also.
Is Captain Billy's access ok?

Sorry hobsie the blokes name doesn't ring a bell. and If you plan well 16-18 should allow you enough time to spend a day in weipa. as for the people asking about chilli beach the road is now open for 4wd vehicles. I have just done the telegraph track and it is very very passable just make sure you are prepared as some of the crossings are waist deep. camp trailers will be fine just make sure there water proof and gunshot is no problems for any sort of vehicle the have cut a chicken track into it.

Spoke to 3 young blades at Musgrave Station yesterday who had just come back from Chilli Beach and they said the road was ok. Their cars were pretty dirty but they said there was nothing they couldn't handle. The top part of the Lakefield NP is still closed due to road works but we are hoping it opens in the next few days.
As for the rest of the roads - We left Cooktown on 24 May and have been ambling up since. The roads are fantastic!! I have never driven on better anywhere in some places. There is at least one quarter fully bitumenised and white lines and coming into Coen there are even gutters! Takes all the adventure out of it.
We were worried about tackling the Cape but so far (we are in Weipa nowand still on our way to the top) it has been a doddle.
So thanks for the advice from all those who said just do it. We did and it has been fine. Although I daresay the worst is yet to come.
