Here's an interesting new development. If this does what is claimed, and it certainly looks promising, Oz should be sitting pretty for (relatively) cheap, clean fuel supplies for many decades to come. Should be ideal for 4WD.

We are Denso service agents and at a training day about a month ago they were showing us the damage biodiesel does to injectors, they have done tests that showed anymore then 2% biodiesel does damage and straight biodiesel is very bad.

The tests were carried out on common rail injection systems.

The damage is caused by the solvents they use to thin the biodiesel and make it mix.

There opinion is why use biodiesel at this stage and what you save now will cost you big time in the future.

You also have to remember Denso does not have any ties with any fuel company as it would be in there best intrest to suport all fuel types.

I am not sure about the SAFE biodiesel as they did not go into great detail about any brands.

They showed us information about the hydrocarbon diesel that you have a link to and they are following very closely, they said this looks like the future and at current use rates we have enough for at least 400 years.

Yes, I have a number of concerns about biodiesel as well, especially the plant that is being built in Darwin which is designed to use palm oil. The problems caused by palm oil plantations seem to me to well and truely outweigh the benefits. Biodiesels aint biodiesels, there are many different processes around. The biodiesel tecyhnology being used by the ARW group in Australia, for example appears to be very different.

What is interesting about the article I gave the link to, is that it isn't biodiesel, It is a mineral based fuel made from natural gas. It also requires a new type of diesel engine, which according to the article, has already been developed by several major vehicle manufacturers and is now ready for production. Given the huge reserves of natural gas Oz has, this might be worth a serious look.

This new fuel comes out of the ground as a gas and is liquidfied to form a diesel based fuel.

All diesel will run happly on it according to the info Denso have obtained.
