Can any one tell me how frequently we are likely to mencounter bush flies on the the cape. We have travelled extensively in Central Aus so know to expect them there but are we likely to encounter the same on the Cape?

As a rule of thumb.
The drier it is the more flies.
Cape York = wetter climate = not may flies.

As you go inland away from coast more flies but nothing like cental Oz

Excellent rule of thumb. Just confirmed with a nearly 4 week trip from Perth to Broome and back.

I think there is a empirical rule

No of Bush Flies/sqM = 100/Average Annual Rainfall(in MM)

This rule only applies at a virgin site (i.e. when you arrive) and is only valid between sunrise and sunset.

Depending on the time since you last showered the density will doubles every minute times each day since your last shower reaching saturation point when you swallow a couple and start gagging.

Interestingly no flies would enter our new van. It did smell a bit plasticy when we set out, however there was no need to close the fly wire door when entering.

Flies much less prevalent in areas that had cattle (dung beetles) which like wetter climates.

If you can get it:
(1) Natures Botanical barrier cream (good for horses dogs and homo sapiens)
Site Link

or DIY:
baby oil, drops of Rosemary and Cedarwood essential oils (not to be used as sex aid)

If these don't keep the b##%@* flies off, you've must have been dead for at least a week.

cheers
