Hi all,
I'm within days of purchasing a new Pajero Exceed which has 18" wheels. I have just found out that my preferred tyres, Coopers ATRs are not available in this size. Are there other decent tyres that i should look at, or is it a case of buying the Prado instead ?
I can't believe Mitsubishi bring out a new 4wd that you can't take to the many great spots in Australia because there standard tyres are not rated for off road travel.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Mickey Thompson MTZ's and ATZ's both come in 18" It depends on which state you are in as to if the car will still be roadworthly or not.

This was the exact situation I was in when I got the Prado with 17" wheels 3 years ago. Was knacker all available at the time and I got Cooper A/Ts in 265/70R17 which was bigger that the stock 265/65R17 Dunlops. Am now running Cooper ATR and Goodyear MTR (2nd set) in the same size. Few more choices available.

Now they decide to bring out 18" wheels! Why can't manuafacturers stick with standard sizes???? Is it all a con to have us paying more because the tyre distributors have to stock endless sizes and varieties???

Bet you $100 that you can't put any smaller alternative wheels on either. Brake caliper size was the excuse on Prado.

Best of luck! Sorry I cannot be of more assistance other than to sympathise.

Thanks for that guy's,
I'll be ringing Mitsubishi tomorrow and ask for their comments as it states in their blurbs if you intend to take the Pajero offroad on a regular basis that the tyres are not up to it and to contact your dealer for recommendations on replacement. Should be interesting as to what they say. !!!
Boy am i jacked off as i test drove the Pajero on the w/end and was rapt. To think that all the intended trips later in the year that i was to go on, would have had to be cancelled because of the tyres.
I'm in Vic so will look into whether other sugestions are legal.

we had the dame issues when we decided to buy the Disco 3. Even though there was the odd 18" tyre available, I was not happy that I couldn't go to just about any tyre dealer in Oz (especially in the outback) and just pik a tyre up "off the shelf" if we needed one.

Our solution was to tell the dealer that we wanted 17" rims from the base-model Landy or we wouldn't go through with the deal. As it happens, the brake pack in these two models were the same, so the wheels would fit.

In the case of the Pajero, if you really must buy one, don't forget that the NP model came out with 17" rims and there might be a chance that they will fit. Ask the dealer.

Btw, if you want a 17 page essay on why you shouldn't by a Pajero for serious off-road touring, PM me. Mine is two years and two months old and has been in the dealer's workshop a total of twenty two weeks so far.

Cheers,

Russ.

You can fit the 17"s on the Paj as that's what the lower spec models come with.
Won't be too long till the tyre suppliers get a range of 18" tyres on the market.

haven't checke but I think you'll find any 18 tyres will have a different (higher) aspect ratio than whatever comes std on the Paj. The overall diameter will therefore be larger, how much might be too much.

Have the same problem with 17" tyre on Prados. Not LT (light truck construction) AT's in the correct size (265/65/17)

Procomp make an 18" radial AT tyre.
They are in Hallam/Narre Waren somewhere (can find out if you want) and they sponsor the Paj club. Join the club for $100 pa and you will get a discount on the tyres and also the Paj depending on where you buy it.
I was told that you could special order 17" for the Exceed but I have not checked.

Thanks Rusty,
If this purchase comes off it will be my third Pajero in a row so i probably should join the Pajero club.
I've had lengthy discussions today with Mitsubishi re the tyre situation. The only reputable off road tyre that is available in 18" are the Mickey Thompson MTX and the ATZ. The MTX are only available in 275/75/18 which i have been told are far to big a profile for the Paj which has 265/60/18. The ATZ are only marginally larger at 275/65/18 than the standard (will give Paj 20mm lift).
Mitsubishi has said they will not void any warranty, and are ok with that tyre. I have to now decide that i may have to get the speedo re calibrated and i will loose some power with the larger profile tyres if i go ahead. Decisions decisions!
Touch wood that i have had a terrific run with the Pajeros, love the way they drive but i need to upgrade to a deisel to tow my off road van. Now i need to wonder if the M/T ATZs are any good or is it still better to delay any purchase until a better tyre selection is available.
Thanks for everyones input.

Quote "Mitsubishi has said they will not void any warranty, and are ok with that tyre" unquote.

Was that Mitsubishi Motors Australia Pty Limited ot the stealer (oops - dealer) that said these tyres are OK? When my suspension bushes failed in the NP Pajero, the Service Manager at the stealer (oops I did it again - Dealer) said that Mitsubishi could refuse repair as the tyres were not standard for the model. They fixed it eventually - reluctantly.

Get it in writing.

Cheers,

Russ.
