Woman survives outback ordeal
May 15, 2007 - 5:22PM

A woman has survived a day-and-a-half trapped in her car after it rolled on a remote stretch of outback highway in the Northern Territory.

Police said the 36-year-old woman was lucky to be alive following the accident about 150 km north of Tennant Creek near Renner Springs on Friday night.

It is believed the vehicle rolled several times as it ran off the Stuart Highway into nearby scrub after the woman fell asleep at the wheel.

She was trapped in the wrecked Toyota Echo unable to move, with no food or water, until a tourist discovered her on Sunday morning.

The man noticed the car about 30 metres from the side of the road and contacted police after discovering the woman inside the vehicle, police said.

When police arrived she was conscious and in a stable condition and was taken to Tennant Creek Hospital.

Police spokesman Nathan Finn said the woman was lucky to be alive.

"The car actually didn't require jaws of life. The car was that badly damaged that the roof just peeled off by hand," he told ABC Radio.

The woman was later airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.

150Km north of Tennant Creek.... wonder what the "tourist" used to contact police? Sat Phone? HF Radio? Drove to Tennant creek?

Even on a majour highway like that between TC and Katherine I would think that they would be well out of phone range.

The value of carrying good comms when remote.

Might be an idea to carry a can-opener or nail file and a water bottle if using 'small vehicles'

At a guess I would say a telephone at Renner Springs at the Roadhouse or Motel was means of contact

Me I'd stay with the injured person & use the HF via VKS737 that's why I'm a member. It will be picked up and dealt with professionally.

Frightening to think that she would have been passed by hundreds of vehicles over that period of time.

Hey Al, truckster being an expert on this subject, I would trust his call on their whereabouts. Especially the feral one's, that would be right up his alley.

She was driving on the Stuart Highway, not trying to go off road...although she did ...

I am sure the Stuart Highway is kind to non-4WD vehicles. I found it to be a good stretch of road.

... and a hell of a lot better than what we have to put up with here on the NSW Central Coast. Calling them goat tracks is an insult to the goats.
