Hi All:

I am considering the purchase of a 2002 TOYOTA LANDCRUISER HZJ105R GXL diesel. It has a Turbo Dynamic water cooled turbo and intercooler fitted and has very low mileage. It looks to be in excellent condition.

I am interested in finding out from those of you "in the know" if there were any known "issues" with this model Landcruiser (crook big ends etc etc) that I should be aware of before I go to inspect it. I am assuming the Turbo Dynamic turbo is an after market addition.

Many thanks, in advance.

Hey Jack

I have a 2002 non turbo GXL diesel, It has 293000 km on it and goes fine, intact I towed a 5mtr bout the other day from Darwin to Jabiru at 115 kph no problem.

Now people will tell you how the front diff will fail and the gearbox will fail, As far as I am concerned, My vehicle do a lot harder work than most, as they have a different driver every and there a work cars, so long as you don't drive it like you stole it, it will last a life time, I have seen these trucks with 500000 km on them.

Cheers Steve.

Thanks Steve:

Heard the same thing when I bought my 80 Series, but with 340,000km up it is still going strong. Sad to part with it as it has been most reliable, but I am going to bet a camper trailer, and my current 80 series (non turbo) will be struggling with it.

Appreciate your input.

G'day Jack,

I have a 2002 HZJ105 (non-turbo) and couldn't be more happier with it. I will keep it non turbo for now as I am not in any sort of screaming hurry when we go anywhere. A few extra horses from time to time when climbing up hills, would be good but a bit hard to justify.

It is but a pup, just starting to loosen up with 75 000 on the clock.

Jack,
I am looking at similar. My Mechanic has advised me the the pistons on the 105 are not as strongs as when the motor was in the 80 series. As a result and after market turbo with full bosst leads to high exhaust gas temps the will wreck the pistons ( this is why most after market turbo kits include intercooler). HE is of the opinious that turing the motor / pump / turbo boost with and exhaust gass monitor (manifold) will eliminate the problem. He said hs has seen a few motors with this problem.
I have also been warned the the gear box in a 105 standard is essentially a prado gear box and is a bit weaker than the TD and Petrol gear box's. Not sure if this would affect a GXL.
Paul.

pt_nomad.

much obliged. Gives me something to watch. I *think* the guy who owns this one would not have it boosted up too high as he wanted to use it to tow his camper. We shall see ...

Thanks again.

Ive got a 2003 model and am about to I/C Turbo it.Would be a good idea to get a EGT gauge to moniter the exhaust temps so you can ease off if getting to high.Have also heard that the pistons are weaker in the 1hz 100 series than the 1hz 80 series due I believe to the emmision crap.
Great vehicle, just a little underpowered when towing(ok alot).
Look for a good service history, oil change every 5000kms would be the greatest importance.

G'day Jack
We have a 100 series GXL 1HZ non turbo 11/2002
When we bought it it didn't take long to work out it was a real slug and something had to be done to make it go. this model is fitted with an EGR system that simply dumps raw exhaust gas into the intake when the engine comes under load ,the way I read it is that reburning some of the exhaust gas raises the combustion temperature thereby creating less emissions
The result is a loss of power, obviously we all want to get the most out of the vehicle we drive so the after market people develop ways to get more out of the them
Reputable turbo fitters such as the one you mentioned wouldn't be around if every engine they fitted one to blew up, the biggest problem is people trying to get more out of them after the're set up correctly
If it's low milage as you say and everything looks and sounds OK go for it, you wont be sorry
To be sure of what you've bought put it on a dyno straight away and make sure boost and exhaust temperature is correct and you should have no problems

Regards Diesel

Hi Jack

I have a 7/2002 HZJ105 GXL auto box (total slug). I installed a DTS turbo after 15000Km, now have 103,000km. No intercooler

The bearing went inside the turbo after around 50,000km, not sure why but it was out of warranty, so i had it rebuilt and havent had a problem since.

The only thing wrong with mine is a shutter that develops in overdrive when cruising between 1600 and 1800 rmp (around 75kmph) it goes away as soon as you either ease off or increase throttle, the car has had the problem from before the turbo addition, it is a factory fault. Toyota obviously dont have enough of these vehicle around to worry about coming up with a remedy so if anyone has a cure i would love to know.

Having said that I love the car and plan on keeping it for many years to come.

If its an auto box keep an eye out for the shutter but keep in mind that other also do it, i don't find it a problem any more as you tend to alter your driving style to avoid it but it was annoying at first.

As long its had the regular services and oil changes its well worth considering.

Cheers Scott

By the way first time on - Hi to all.
