I have a 60 series landcruiser with a 2H motor, (now at 350,000 k). I am looking at options to re-power it - preferable to increase power (for towing mostly, intend to tow about a 2 - 2.5 T van).

So far it looks I have found 3 options
A. a rebuild of the 2H
B. rebuild and turbo the motor
C. replace with a V8 chevvy diesel

Does anybody have any experience with any of these options, or have any other ideas I might consider?

Anybody have any idea what the Chevvy V8 implant costs?

Thankyou for your thoughts.

samton,

Fitting a 12HT would also be an option and should not cost more that rebuilding and fitting a turbo to the 2H. I have 2H with turbo and it goes well but the 12HT is a better engine. I had a quote for a Chev diesel conversion to a 60 series and it was about 20k (that was two years ago).

Cheers,
Dave

I agree with most the Chev is the best engine but not worth the 20k!

Id be looking at the trading post for a good running engine Lcruiser with a chev that you could transplant and then sell the rest to offset the cost. I hazzard a guess you may get away alot chaeaper and end up with a good rig that you havent over-capitalised on!

Its hard not to be sentimental though when you know what you already have!

Alll the best

Matt.

I have a 60 series with 2H motor, rebuilt and turbo. It goes very well and has done about 60000 since the rebuild. The rebuild/turbo was done before I bought it. As I understand (and trust) the engine was rebuilt to deal with the added turbo. Different valves/ pistons and big end. I can't say which is the best option, I can only report that mine works well.

Samton,
Before going too far I would be checking the maximum allowable tow weight and tow ball down load limit for your 60 series if staying within the law concerns you. My old 60 series only had a towball down load limit of 125kg. Be careful there is a fair bit of dis-information about on this subject.
Cheers,

2h and power should not be said in the same sentence. in my mind the 2h is not a good motor to turbo, it just isnt strong enough and sooner or later you will have problems, especially with overheating, cracked head,l blowing pistons etc. chev conversion is too much of an outlay, i would go the 12ht, made for turbo, big skirts on pistons and oil slingers, just a great engine. i have recently got one to put in my 60.

Samton,
not to be rude mate,
but your considering a 20k chev conversion to a 20 maybe yr old bus.
HAve you thought of retiring the old girl.
20k will get you something newer, more comfy, and enough power without mod's to tow.
my opinion only, but its what i would lean toward. either way, good luck with whatever u do.
cheers,

Samton.
Just finished a rebuild on a 2h last Monday. I would not recommend doing it again as these motors are expensive and have problems. You will find it is cheaper and better to sell the 60 and get a latter vehicle. You spend $10k doing up and turbo and you still have a vehicle that is old and worth nothing. Just not worth the sentimental thing, " she's a good old bus and worth fixing". NO. Eric.

Mate, in Sundays paper (Perth) Toyota advertised complete motors on sale.

1HZ $9250
HDT $9250
1HDTE $9250

I have to agree with others above. It aint worth it!
