Going to NZ @ Christmas & was wondering if my MiniMax wireless internet connection and my Bigpond wrip-off account will work in NZ. Know I could ring them but I hate pressing 1 then 2 + 1 etc . Besides there's bound to be others in the same frame of mind as me.

Thanks
Dunc

Hi Duncan i just tried telstra for you and it say's they have a high level demand and have to wait a long time (what a suprise) i'd think you would have to go on roaming (cdma) and it would be at a much higher rate.....

But in the end you'd have to call unless you are already on roaming ?????

Will try again later or if someone knows for sure from this site !

Thanks guys, would appear that it's based on a Next G telephone handset and not a laptop and wireless.

Gooday,
Have just spent 5 weeks in NZ, can tell you for sure MiniMax will not work over there, don't know about the replacement which is on 3G.
Can tell you I took our laptop, and NZ Telecom & our Telstra do not like one another. They let us download 1 lot of E-mails & that was it they then lock you out.
After lots of frustrations & Dollars we found if we changed our settings to smpt.xtra.co.nz we could then access our incoming mail VIA the BIGPOND website, & could send outgoing E-mail via our normal outgoing settings. I found the Internet Kiosks in the Holiday/Caravan parks on a par with Zimbabwe, bloody costly bescause they were so slow or froze your screen evry 3 minutes. Even using their terminals was pathetic in mostplaces. Many of thenm are linked via a crowd called Hotspot & they have the speed choked to less than dial up. A couple oof places were on Global Gossip which is the one you get via Macdonalds.

The only success I sometimes had was going Internet Cafes, some were really good & inexpensive, but in the main the parks were $10-00 NZ per hour, Gold coin donation every 15 minutes.
Would sure think twice about taking our own Laptop again.
Even most of the Internet Cafes had people there who knew nothing about the workings. Two or 3 exceptions was DuBDubDub in Wanaka, & a bloke upstairs in downtown Dunedin, then a shop in Whangeri.

If I were to do it again I would only use the E-shops (cafe's ) in the towns , give most of the park terminals a wide bert.

Can give you the moves to change your settings if you are intent on taking your own laptop, comtact me on profile spacemail address.
Cheers, & may patience & good luck be with you.
Boroma604.
PS watch out for the Kiwi Drivers!!!!!!!!!!!. No Joke, in those 5 weeks, we were in a Motor Camper & passed on double lines there, more times than I have int the rest of me 51 years I have been driving, and they have perfected Tailgating to an absoloute art form, along with many other suicidal moves.

Also a lot of white crosses along the road sides.

Interesting way of keeping the population numbers down:-(

Thanks for the advice. Funny when we were last in NZ 5 years ago found the driving easy as and no problems with tailgaters. Don't like the fact that they hide speed cameras in the back of vans. Got to the point if I saw a parked vehicle i slowed to about 5k below the limit.

G'day Doug got to give you a call about the GPS. Yer bought the MiniMax in Karratha last year when we were tripping around, (cost $500 or so), cos we were sick and tired of the hassles of internet cafes and caravan parks charging the earth and not letting me hook in my laptop. Got well and truly caught as the guy in the shop didn't tell us the consequences if you cannot get wireless reception & it reverts to the CDMA network thus your time on the Net is charged at normal CDMA call rates (ouch). Download was so slow that we only ever bothered to deal with text emails only and the wife's online banking (still had to pay the bills). Had decent Wireless reception in Darwin and that was about all. Things bloody useless here in Forrestfield also.
