Hello learned friends,

My 91 std 80 series has served me well since i bought her a year and a half ago. I was sure i was on a winner when the NRMA inspector started talking about stiff window winders. I did however notice a crack under the front roof rack clamp on the pillar behind the front doors where it joins the roof, which hasnt since given any trouble despite continued use on very rough roads. However i am now looking at a getting rid of the 3/4 roof rack with matching canvas bags (in WA atm ;) and sorting a roof top tinny set up. Does anyone have any experience with this problem or foresee any trouble? The tinny is all i will have up there. Hoping i might be able to have an easy hinge set up made so i can tilt the tinny and swag it up there under the stars... bit sick o the ground (Bush mice sound like elephants on your canvas at 3 in the morning).

Any help appreciated
Richard

Toyota denied there was ever a problem with the roof pillars cracking, but.....just about every Standard 80 I've seen that has done corrugated time has cracked the seam between the roof and the D pillar inside the rear doors. Mine was repaired when I bought it and had additinal plating welded in, but it cracked again fairly quickly. Had the car nearly 10 years and did 150K, was never a real problem, but it rarely wore a roof rack.
