For tightarses like me, a good
free camp is a joy, we also enjoy the solitude such
places can provide. Unfortunately not always easy to find, but these are
recomended for the independant traveller....
1. Heron Bend on the Murray at Overland Corner. The joy of this place is that the
Overlander hotel is easily accessible across a short track direct from the river &
should not be missed. Great birdlife too.
2.
Parachilna Gorge. 12 k from the drag at Parachilna heading into the Flinders.
A beautiful, rugged
gorge & a lovely
bush camp. Pub is tolerable too.
3. Algebuckinna
Bridge on the Ood road. Drive right up or past the
bridge for
excellent campsites.Magic place at sunrise. Sorry, no pub.
4.
Road Camp LHS about 20 k before WA border on Tanami. If you cant get
exited about camping at Rabbit Flat, & we certainly couldnt, keep going to
this place. Just a lot of bare ground but the most glorious sunset & sunrise
imagineable.
No doubt there are hundreds of other
places as good, & yes the Camps 3 book is
a very handy thing, but we have recently road tested these & found them very
acceptable, apart from Heron Bend we were sole occupants.....oldbaz.

On the
Gary Junction road, about 50K west of Jupiter
Well on the RHS of the track. Enough space for a small army, no camels etc. Magic sunrises and sunsets.

G'day Baz
Yep can confirm all those free camps. Another one on the Murray is at
Hogwash Bend between
Cadell and Waikerie.
In our 5 years on the road we camped in hundreds of free camps. Just have to ask locals or other travellers or use the Free Camps Book.
Cheers

In 1999 we camped about 60km sout of the Lind
Junction on the Kennedy Development Rd. It was a great spot, plenty of room. level and reasonably
well grassed. In fact after a month of good rain the grass was quite long.
We had a great nights rest in the council's roadside stockpile. The sunrise was good too.
We had another great night in a
clearing at the side of the track about 139km SW of
Coolgardie in 1996. Just a couple of years ago we had one of the best nights ever in the bush with some friends just beside the road between
Cameron Corner and
Fort Grey. These are just a few of many examples theat spring to mind
Just have to keep your eyes open and be adaptable. Travelling in good company is also a major bonus.
It's also nice to be told about
places that others have enjoyed. Gives you something to look for.

Guys,
Make these available to all by adding them as a New Place in the
Places database under Designated Free Camps - first do a
check for the place at the
places home page and if it is found open it and use the edit option to add your information. If it is not found use the New Place button and put up as much info as you can. Pictures are also great in this area so don't just post them in here put them in the master database and share them for all. (Hit
Places in the menu above)
