Hi, we are just about to start our trip through central Australia and then up to
Broome. We plan on getting to
Broome at the end of June. We have tried to book accommodation for three nights but everything seems to be booked out or too expensive. We have emailed a few caravan parks and one of them said that they don't take bookings and just to ring the day before we arrive to check for vacancies. Do you think we should take the risk of leaving it till we get there? We dont want to get there and have no where to stay. I have heard that the council opens up a new area somewhere in
Broome when the town fills up. We would prefer to stay in a caravan
park as both families are in camper trailers but if that is not available then perhaps a unit/cabin will do. We might need a bit of luxury by then!!
Any info would be great....
thanks

When we visited
Broome in 1982 we queued outside the
Roebuck Bay Caravan
Park for three days before getting a site. These days with more caravan parks and more accommodation
Broome is the drawcard of the north. You may be lucky to get a place but I doubt it. People are booking 18 months in advance to stay there.
Frankly I wouldn't waste my time caravan
parking it. I would source a
campsite further north along
the beach somewhere or at Middle
Lagoon and do treks into
Broome to savour the atmosphere.
Broome is now to WA what Noosa or the
Gold Coast is to Queensland. Certainly not my cuppa tea.....:-)
Cheers

thanks for the reply. It was really helpful. Maybe we'll look into staying out of
broome then. I'll start searching now. Thanks again.

Hi. Try calling a
park and offer to pay in advance for the number of nights you want. It worked for me in the early ninties. You might be lucky and get in.

Council opens up the showgrounds if parks run out so isnt a real hassle. They do the same here.

Hi FionaD,
Stayed in
Broome last year in July ,
Roebuck bay CP was booked out, stayed at the PCYC around the corner for a couple of days then got a spot at the CP, some of the group managed to get cabins in the
park also. The
Broome Cup had finished the day before , try and be in
Broome at the time the Stairway to the stars occurs, only lasts a short time, not exactly sure on when , it was happening when we were there though. Have a great trip.
See ya
Nutter

yes you will find it jam packed with people from next month until the end of shinju. bird observatory is ok and pcyc is good value and you get to watch the kids play footy. the parks do take bookings but only from those who stay for months - the regulars. there are plenty of good spots along the coast to the north as after a few days that's about it for
broome. also go towards 80mile though that gets crowded as
well. in fact it is all crowded - fitzroy lodge,
derby get full - only poor
old halls creek has plenty of space and there's a reason for that. try and contact the tourist bureau as they do their best but sometimes you may only be able to get in if there are vacancies. you can also head up
the beach and spend a night (or 2) and just journey into town for whatever. just be prepared for waiting and don't get angry with the help - they really are trying to do their best. oh and when you get north into sunshine make sure you slip into relax mode and just enjoy the change. rgds

We were in
Broome end of June '05 - didn't book anywhere - just turned up - couldn't get in to a caravan
park for love nor money - but were told about the overflows - extra
camping for tourists - had already been told by someone down the track that if we had to go to one of these - the rifle club was the better one - not as crowded - bit bushy - but really good - it is on the road out to the
Broome wharf - we stayed there 5 nights =- which is all we wanted anyway - and it was heaps cheaper than the caravan parks. There were all sorts of travellers staying there - tents, vans, campertrailers, tent trailers etc. The people running it were really nice, and the amenities (though limited) were spotless at all times.
happy travelling
