Can anyone assist me with any local knowledge on the road condition between
St George, Qld and
Mitchell, Qld?
We will be towing a
Kimberley Karavan and generally sit on around 90-100km/hr on a good black-top surface.
I have tried ringing the local council and they didn't enthuse me with their knowledge. I received a "maybe" and "possibly". I need more info than that.
It's shorter in distance going from
St George to
Mitchell direct rather than via
Roma to
Mitchell however shorter is not necessarily better or quicker.
Thanks in advance.

Ring one of the Post Offices and ask them to ask the mail delivery contractors what they like. They the people who use them the most.
Cheers Bruce.

Hi Pete - The RACQ has a trip planner on line - free - with some local info.
Go to : Site Link
From my map, this is a good bitumen road, however RACQ note that this route passes through a known flood location. The road follows the Maranoa river, with dozens of tributaries feeding in from the north, in the Chesterton ranges.
The west has had some good rains lately, even Innaminca has had 3" in the last week, so without actually traveling the road, it may be difficult to know if it is flooded. Perhaps try the Roads Dept of both councils......Keith

Hi Keith
I looked up the link and noted that is is flood prone.
The site had a phone number to ring for current road conditions which I will do if I end up heading that way.
Thanks for the reply

Pete,
I just rang my Old Man, (he lives in
St George)
Over the last few years the road from
St George to
Mitchell has had a lot of work done to it and is now his preferred choice to get to
Mitchell.
He reckons that it will need monsoonal rains to flood it now as the river and tributaries are that dry.
The turn off for the road is 5km from the Jack Taylor weir on the Balonne highway to
Bollon. It is the second right actually. The first goes to the Golf course and eventually gets to the
Mitchell highway (you need to take the left hand road at the Y
intersection about 400m past golf course main
gate).
Be on the look out for wildlife as with the little rain they have had has bought the animals to the roadside for the feed.
Hope this helps
Kev

Kev
Thanks heaps for that. The detail you've provided is exactly what I was looking for.
Heading that way in late July. Will
check the conditions first however it will save about an hours drive over the
Roma route.
Cheers

Yep. I have towed a 27 footer along that road a number of times in the 90's. Pretty flat country asd I recall.

Pete,
The local contact number for Flood and Road conditions is (07) 4620 8899
It is a dial only number (Which I think has a recorded message with the current conditions listed for the Balonne Shire)
If not call the Overseer on (07) 4625 3255.

Another point is that the 80km/h zone goes almost to the
Mitchell rd turn off and the cops love sitting in the area to catch speedsters

I have escorted Loads via
St George to
Mitchell when the Amby
Bridge was being widened. head west from
St George about 5.3 klm and turn right , when you get to the
intersection of the Balonne Hwy and the
Carnarvon Hwy in the middle of town you turn left, zero the trip meter and do 5.3klm and turn right onto
Mitchell /
St George Rd , it is sealed all the way,

Pete
Towed the coromal up that road last July, all bitumen, sometimes bumpy, lots of road kill and live hoppies as
well. no real problems but dont know about flooding. We did see some bustards as
well, which made the trip for us.
cheers

Thanks dinbat
Info such as yours has helped me decide to take the
Mitchell Rd.
The road seems suitable with normal care.
Thanks

The RACQ website has some really detailed notes re road conditions which seem to be updated regularly. Give it a try.
