My experience with computers over some 20 years has taught me that many problems with them are the result of silly/simple errors caused by the operator/user. Best advice is to always look for the most obvious solution which is generally the simplest most expedient to resolve any problems. Too many 'gurus' will tell you that the first thing you need to do is re-format the hard drive. WRONG, that would be the very last thing I would even consider let alone do. A bit like vehicles, you don't have to be an expert to use them or fix them, HOWEVER there comes a time when it's absolutely time for some professional intervention.

Remember - 'if it ain't broke - don't fix it'.

The most obvious problem is usually code-named by Tech Support Personnel as PEBKAC (or Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair)

I can remember three such incidents from when I worked as an on call technician...

Once I was called out desperately to fix a computer that was used in the Page Layout department of a Melbourne periodical publisher to fix an A4 portrait monitor taht would not work....I sat down....saw that the power light was on....turned up the brightness.... All was good....

Another time I was called out on a Saturday morning (At some ridiculous rate) to fix a Mac at a travel Agents in Melbourne's east only to find that they had plugged a serial cable into the SCSI port (For external Hard drives etc).

And finally a friend was called out two weeks in a row to a company to fix a broken monitor...On arrival (same monitor both times) he found that the power cord was unplugged from the power point....Seems the cleaner was unplugging it to use his Vacuum cleaner and not plugging the monitor back in again afterwards.
