our 80 series (279,300km) isn't wanting to accelerate when its cold and gets what seems to be a lag, motor also sounds different too when its running like this....doesn't sound as smooth. sounds a bit raw. what would be causing this and hows it fixed? would it be a fuel pump ?

also gotta do bearings this week -pulley bearings???

Hey Laura

When was the oil changed last? As when the oil breaks down in a diesel it tends to sound a bit raw as you put it.

No the bearings are not pressed so no pulley required.

The best wheel bearing grease to use is Morrey's Big foot EP2, Its not cheap but it's the best on the market, Its a bit messy to use as it's as sticky as baby poo.

Don't forget to replace the axle seals, it's a fun job as I have just done 2 trucks with 1 to go.

Hope this helps.

Steve.

Would have thought that an 80 series would be be old enough to have it's own "hot flushes"

Not yet, still trying to find the one I'm after.
Mind you I've looked at close to 30 ATM.

Change your fuel filter as a starter...clean the inlet filter, put some diesel conditioner in it if you dont usually...and if all that doesnt work, light an old diesel rag and throw it under the sump in the mornings to warm her up :)

In that case, check air filter and valve clearances.

G'day Diver1,
Does it do it on both fuels (LPG & Petrol) or is it specific to 1 particular fuel source. This will narrow it to a fuel supply problem or engine tune etc.
Keep in touch

Hey G'day Laura,

So it sounds like it's a fuel delivery problem specific to Petrol (as long as it's not simply having a good run).

I don't think it'll be anything related to the fuel pump as it simply pumps when powered & isn't relevant to engine operating temp.

If it's carby then check the plate height on the mixer.
If it's EFI then that's a whole different kettle of fish.....
When you are running on LPG you are actually bypassing alot of the vehicles sensors so if they are giving you grief, you will mainly experience it only when on petrol. There isn't that many sensors in the system really. Air Flow Meters / Air Mass Meters are usually what gives trouble most of the time. This tells the cars computer how much air is going into the engine & the computer calibrates the Petrol Injection accordingly so if the AFM is giving the wrong info then the engine will have the wrong amount of Petrol being delivered so it'll run poorly. Apart from that you have the Throttle Position Sensor which is also used by the gas in most systems so would effect both fuels or the coolant temp sensor which the cars computer uses to know how to calibrate the Petrol delivery. In all honesty i'd be surprised if it was giving you trouble. It's not impossible but they very rarely play up.

I'd be checking the Air Flow Meter / Air Mass Meter (whichever it has) 1st off the rank. If it comes up ok then go further with other sensors.

Keep In Touch

Changed fuel filter but havent had the chance to run her really cold on petrol but i think prob is kinda solved, for now....got a pretty big gear box leak and there's oil coming out of motor too....aaahhhh...never ending !!!

Going to run some injector cleaner in it and give her a clean out...

When its cold, and its down this for ages, (on lpg) it doesnt like accelerating and almost stalls but comes good if you stop accelerating and then try to get going...just another one of those things that you never think of fixing except for when it happens first thing in the morning!!

Cheers,

Laura
