Can anyone assist, Most of the latest 4X4 with auto boxes also have manual selection in a gate alongside. I need to find out with the auto boxes with this manual gate if there is a way of locking the box into one or another gear?

I know you can put it into for example 3rd low for hill work but if it starts to feel the hill a little it will drop back to 2nd, then usually travel 5 mtrs and get up enough revs to go back up to 3rd. Problem is as it goes back up to 3rd it drops enough revs to die on the hill. I tried the same hill in another vehicle with less power but with a positive select aoto box and it made it with a lot less problems than the standard auto box. Just thought if we have the technology to do it with most of the latest models and even lock up diffs etc surely there is a way to do it to an Auto Gearbox

Most of these boxes, when you use the gate they actually behave like a manual box so will stay in the gear selected til you flick it up or down. Some boxes without the gate system also can be locked in a particular gear with the HOLD button.

I don't pretend to know anything about slush boxes.....the only time I ever drive one is when I get a company car for an hour or so (either a Falcon or a Toyota Orian). I can't imagine they would hold a gear indefinitely once you flick it over to that part of the selector option. Say you were driving it like a manual and had it in 3rd gear....What happens when you approach a set of traffic lights and try to take off again? I'm almost certain it wouldn't try to take-off in 3rd....it would drop back to 1st and then build up to 2nd and 3rd (but I have no idea if it would then try to get itself into 4th??)

Mitsubishi last Magna and the new 380 when you use their triptronic they wont allow you to select a higher gear than 1st to take off. ie you cannot start in 3rd.

If you select 1st it WILL stay in first and not shift up till you let it...it will rev its head off when you forget you geared down earlier and didnt choose D again.

It will only let you gear down a specific amount...ie wont let you drop to 1st unless you are below about 30-40kmh but will allow multiple drops....ie 5th on a freeway and you can snap back to 3rd in an instant.

This is only Mitsubishi but most behave in a very similar fashion.

You are spot on Matt, I also own a 380 and the gearbox from this would be exactly what is needed, just thought there may be a way of tricking the electronics

G'day Matt,

my 96 build Prado has a second gear take off button, obviously I find it handy on some climbs.

Hi Bushfix, The Challenger also has the second gear takeoff button, I am told it was designed this way for snow and ice etc, and yes it does certainly help on some hillls, I just needed to lock other gears like 3rd etc if possible. Of course I could do what I do now and that is if its a hill I believe that needs 3rd low I use 1st high as these are very close, just as we all know if it starts to struggle then there is nowhere to go lower.

G'day Blaze,

The Prado also has an "overdrive off" selector. If you have this too, can't you just select the gear limit manually and switch overdrive off? ie. if you want go no higher than 2 then select 2 and overdrive off, if you want to go no higher than 3 then select 3 and overdrive off.

Hi Bushie,

Not a problem going higher, I can govern that easily. If I pick a hill as 3rd low and she starts to struggle even a little it will auto down to 2nd then of course as 2nd is really to low for the hill it will build revs very quickly and auto back up to 3rd. Problem is momentum is lost with the 2 changes and we have now stopped digging holes. This is especially the case in sand.

Most can be modified to lock up Blaze , but its usually a special job - certainly web articles about for Nissan's.

Sometimes a better stratergy is to change the pulses going into the transmission ECU via a little electronics board like those from jaycar such that ECU gets a lower pulse count and revs higher before changing, usually only 10% or so is needed as most manufacturers are a little conservative in the change critera

This simple one just cuts the line to the lock relay and puts in a switch Blaze.

The Pajero box acts like a manual in most respects except if you stop it will change back to 1st automatically and wont change up again until you make it. The box will hold whatever gear you put it in till you stop and it selects 1st.
You can select 2nd for "Hill Hold" and low power take offs.

Hi John, Yep I know the Paj gearbox works like that but any other gearboxes such as the challenger which don't have tiptronic gate don't hold a gear and if it gets a bit heavy it will kick down, of course it will not go up to example 3rd if you pull into 2nd but it will still go down a gear then usually start hunting.
