Just when I think I got the moving map working, it doesn't. It worked all the way from Cairns last year to perth but now it only wants to play sometimes. Error communicating with gps.

Magellan explorist 400. I downloaded the latest ozisoftware and the magellan is brand new with latest software courtesy of the original developing a fault.

I think I am going to buy the topo/streetmaps on sd and forget about ozi. and natmaps.

Obee I have two questions,
If your gps is new and has not been used since the old one died have you configured the new Magellan to suit Oziexplorer?.
Have you configured Oziexplorer to suit the Magellan?.
I had a similar problem with a Garmin even though they were the same model.I realize this seems simple and basic but an error to communicate is normally in the configuration. i am no expert but this worked for me.

same model but latest software. They added some pages thats all. Now maybe I should try with each of the pages active though I read nothing to indicate this is neccessary.

Owen,

The problem is probably with the configuration within OziExplorer.
You need to tell Ozi what settings to use.

File - Configuration

Under GPS folder - set the GPS Make and GPS Symbol Set to Magellan

Under Com Port Folder - Com Port 1 (or whatever physical port your computer has assigned as input)

Assuming the GPS connects to USB port, it may be assigned as Com 3 or 4.

Don't give up mate!
OziExplorer and Natmap are much easier to view (and considerably cheaper) than the Magellan Topo Maps.

baud rate is highest (115200) as recomended and the lower rates dont work either.

by the way thanks for the feedback. I havent quite given up yet.

Have you got it going yet? - most common issue is wrong com port..among other things...here is cut and paste from previous thread on same subject...

in configuration (GPS Model) it must be set to Magellan USB. You will then have to cycle through the com ports to find which one is being used by the GPS. This assumes you have turned on Nmea output on the GPS (Menu - ADV features - Communications - NMEA Data Com. - choose V2.1 GSA)...and that you have latest version of OziExplorer ( some older versions do not support newer usb magellans)

You can suss out what com port is being used WHEN IN nmea mode by looking on PC at Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware - Modems - Magellan EXPLORIST should be on list - double click on this to get properties - click on modem tab - at top it will tell you what com port is being used (eg Com 4) - use that setting for OziExplorer in configuration under COM tab.

When you are happy with that click on "Start Nmea Communications with GPS" under the moving map tab in OziExporer.

Also you have not stated whether you can connect in file transfer mode??
Have you installed drivers from green disc that comes with gps ? - re-install drivers manually if all above fails.

Cheers
Greg

thanks

well it worked last three times. I am thinking the gps needed to switch to the map window. Otherwise it really should open up everytime if it did it once. I mean the settings must be right for it to work the first time.

It is working with ozi configured "other magellan" and I tried without success with "magellan usb" not to say that it wouldnt normally work in that config.

ozi software is latest two nights ago.

Magellan appears in device manager. In modem properties I turned off "wait for dial tone before dialling" just in case.

I got the lttle program "gps port checker" from ozi now.

just back from several more start ups and it works every time! Dunno what I did but the all the configurations dropped out when the system stopped (suspect hard drive on way out) and now I just have to set it up how I like. What a learning curve!

I will keep a copy of all the advice in case of further problems anyway and thank you all so much.
