Crocket
I wouldn't be without
mine. Hardly use it, I know, BUT a little while ago I had a mishap with the jockey wheel when the trailer was standing free. It would have been a lot of stuffing around to get the drawbar back up to the right height without the Hi Lift !!
Cheers

I would only worry if you going where you wont see another vehicle for a couple of days. Come to think of it, let me know where that rare place is! I have been looking a long time now. LOL

Or words to that effect.

I've never even come close to using
mine during 2 trips to the Cape and
Simpson Desert etc. I've now sold it.
In any case, does your vehicle actually have the right available anchor points for you to use the high lift? Many of the vehicles I see with a nice new, shiny, unused HLJack have nowhere on their front bumper/bullbar or rear plastic bar that they could actually attach/place the tongue of the jack anyway. Of course you may have an attachment that enables you to hook it onto the wheel or hub etc......but for the most part they are a heavy bit of kit that won't get used.
Of course, if you were planning a really remote trip where you HAD to be self-sufficient, then that's a different story.

Good point about lifting points but if you carry a short sling you can make it work if you have to.

You only think you have a decision to make , We are going thru the same except "do we take the boat with us on the trip ,or use the money saved in fuel costs on some professional charters " tis a dilemma ,lol.

There is 2 items of 4x4 gear that I dont own and don't want to , Both are bloody dangerous, They are the Snatch Strap and the HiLift Jack , I would be getting an Exhaust air Jack , I seen a bloke in Mt Isa using a Hi Lift, his hand slipped of the handle and it went bloody beserk with handle just missing his chin ,With the Exhaust jack They are lighter, more stable, and less likely to sink into sand or mud,
I did have one once and went and sold it, but when I went to buy it the salesman/boy said a hi Lift would be better, what if the Motor don't start , you won't be able to use the Ex' Jack , I said to him
well if the Motor won't start I won't I won't need to Jack it , he was speechless.

You are right Doug. Both items can be dangerous, especially if not used appropriately. But so can a 4WD be dangerous if driven by someone with their brain in neutral - that's no reason not to have one.
In my case, I don't have a Hi-Lift jack because I don't need one, or an exhaust jack for the same reason. But I do have a snatch strap, and use it correctly (read 'safely') when it is needed, which is not often.
I had a chuckle about the salesman's reaction. Good one!
Cheers

Geez you lot are determined eh but very funnt too,
OK so I have lifted the rear of my Troopy with the air Jack, [ yes it would do that] So why would want to shove it sideways , just fill the bloody holes in , but IF you did need to move it over a bit just push it as it deflates,
And why would I need to use it as a winch when theres an XD9000 in the bullbar,
and

A snatch strap's not much good when you travel alone as I do when I go off road, also when your alone you tend to think more and not put yourself in situations

Gday Doug,
I cant remember if the bloke who wrote the post stated weather he was traveling on his own or not but.......Ive come accross people before bogged to the arrse where you dont want to drive out close enough to get your strap on , but he also carried one? Made it a shiit load easier. Besides what if some turns up who could help but wasnt carrying a strap because he two was on his own?
Cheers

If you are just taking the main route to the top (OTL) & all the usual tourist sites then I wouldn't bother with a high lift Jack. If you like to get into remote
places by yourself then yes. Depends also if you rely on the jack as a back up winch or bead breaker. If you have other options then there's no point doubling up with gear that will do the same job particually when it weighs so much. The 4 wheel driving on the Cape really isn't as difficult as some would have you believe.
Cheers Craig...........

probably you wont need it as plenty of people go that way. however i dont go to the milk bar now without my Hi lift as had i been another 20k out i might have paid a vey dear price for not taking it on one occasion and was saved big time by it on another. i would take one over a winch anyday

I have only used my High Lift twice.
Once in the
Vic High Country, without it I'd still be there, and once on
Cape York. On the Cape I used it to level up the Trak Shak one night. I had stopped and decided where I wanted to put the camper. I did not want to unhook it because I was affter an early start in the morning but it was not quite level. Out with the High Lift and hey presto one level camper. My mate laughed at me but I slept
well.
If it is easy for you to carry then chuck it in if not leave it. The worst that can happen is that you will have to spend a lot of time getting to know your original equipment jack really
well.

Never used my hi lift as a jack or winch in 10 years but the handle came in handy to euthenase a roo I hit up near Minilya a couple of years back.
My advice, such as it is:-
If you have space and are not put off by the weight, take it.

Leave it.
Unless you have an adaptor to put it on the wheel hub it's next to useless in many situatons.
You don't say what vehicle you're driving, but coil sprung vehicles with long susp travel and a Hilift on the bullbar/rear step etc just don't work
well.

Reasons to take a High Lift.
1 : Its a useful Jack
2 : It can be used to lift a bogged car to put something under the wheel, when you can't use a bottle jack.
3 : It can be used as a bead breaker.
4 : It can be used as a hand winch.
5 : It can be used to lift the trailer to change an axle, or replace a short stub axle you are taking one aren't you.
Site Link
6 : euthenase a roo LOL
Reasons for not taking one.
Can't think of any
Cheers Steve.
