I have driven a truck with E/B , a 1976 CK40 UD and they were good , they would lock the drive on mud in 2nd and 3rd gear ,but still not as good as the Jacobs Engine Brake , I remember seeing the E/B advertised a couple or more years ago and thought the idea would be very good for when towing a caravan abd for
hill decents,
The system on the UD worked with an air operated solenoid ram, with micro switches on the clutch and Accelerator pedals as
well as the lever on the steering Column,
Wonder why they don't make a small version of the Jacobs Brake , would be ideal for the likes of F250s when towing Horse Floats etc

I can just see it now , A Troopy with a big bulge in the bonnet to accomdate the extra height in the engine , that;s using the one same as the larger Trucks .

Know what ya mean about the puff , the UD had a straight through ex' and when you turned it off without hitting the go pedal it used make a very loud HISS and when you took the foot off for a gear change made a noise like a Mortar going overhead, Use to like driving that Truck through the streets of
Melbourne

You wouldn't love exhaust brakes if you lived on a road used by log trucks constantly ignoring the "no exhaust brakes" signs!

Shaker
Awww does the noisy woisy keep him awake .....lol
No mate I know what you mean, I had to ride with a D/head
young idiot from
Brisbane to Melb' back in 02 , I was to be driving this particular Freighliner but it had so much wrong with it that it was sent back to the leaser, Anyhow this goose used the Jake Brake right through the middle of Jerelderie , a flat street at 2am and it was loud to , there is no need for that , On the other hand I had to drive an International S Line down the Palmerston Hwy with a load of Railway Lines without the Jake because there was a fault and it would not work, the lowest gear would not hold the truck back , it wanted to over-rev so the only way was to go up a couple of gears and use the brakes when when the revs got to high, I tell you it was scary because the smoke was pouring out of the trailer brakes,So todays modern Trucks are designed to run in conjunction with Engine Brakes for best efficiency, Yes Shaker like everything in life there will always be someone who has to be a D/Head and give everyone else a bad name,

Hey Doug
Something you might try is the system they have on the Toyota coaster bus they have an exhaust brake.
Just a thought.
Cheers Steve.

No, but the coaster has a 1hz motor.
So it may be plausible.

I drive a Coaster with a 1Hz every day, the exhaust brake works a treat and I really miss it when in the truck.
Have often wondered why the cruisers aren't fitted with them if only on the troopies and traytops.
One thought though is how do they work with an auto trans? Be ok if you could lock the TC but most trans won't allow it in the lower gears.

I use this on my truck
Site Link
the 4" exhaust with the air turbine in place of the kitty has little back pressure
so this unit will solve that ... have it here but not mounted yet ...
have fun
