For some bizzare reason after I upgraded to IE7 I can no longer download/open pdf's.
I have Acrobat 6 Professional as well as Reader installed.

If I open the same site in Mozilla click on the pdf it downloads/opens fine.

Our tech here at work just shrugged his shoulders, mumbled and wandered off.
Anyone have any idea what 's going on. I can't find anything I've turned off.

The file association could have been corrupted.

Find a PDF on your machine or save one from somewhere to your desktop, right click on it, go OPEN WITH.. CHOOSE PROGRAM.. Then at the bottom click the button that says BROWSE

then browse to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat6.0\ then select AcroRd32.exe and then click OPEN

then tick the box you see that says ALWAYS USE THE SELECTED PROGRAM TO OPEN THIS KIND OF FILE and then ok.. see if it opens.

if it doesnt you need to uninstall Adobe (I'd bleep off IE7, its a nightmare), do a registry clean, and then power off the machine for 5 mins, power up and reinstall.

Thanks for that, no go though and I have't got time to uninstall etc now. Will try some other time.

For now think I'll give IE7 a miss and use Mozilla, I didn't like it at first but it's got to be better than IE.

check the add-ons in IE7 (Manage Add-ons in Tools menu) and make sure that the Acrobat ones are enabled as well.

The last time I went back to an earlier version of IE (can't uninstall - can only go back to earlier version), it broke Outlook. Msg: "a file is corrupted/missing in Outlook. Please load install disk and run repair". No fixum. Long story, took lots of work to get it all up and going again as it kept restoring Outlook with the same problem each time.
These days, I'm wary of Microsoft's new gee-whiz apps. Usually upgrade on one machine and try it for a while before committing it to other machines.
Can't say I really like the way IE7 presents and finding one's way around. I know some people love it, but am much happier with the feel of Mozilla.

I had similar problem Troppo but using IE6 , have 4 computers
in front of me which are used all the time and only one did it
and you know this stuff is going to be a hassle so couldn't be
bothered with it and just kept emailing pdfs links to myself for use
on next computer.

The computer on which it did it happened to be the one on which
I had a full legal copy of acrobat professional and I suspected it
not IE6 because IE just hands over control as determined by its file associations.

This post got me to see if I could fix - so thanks.

First I went to control panel and changed file associations
so there was none to PDF files.

Then I went to IE and tried to open a PDF from web.

Instead of coming up with the little red square it came up with
"unknown file" and gives you chance to save it.

This proved to me it was the Acrobat program not IE and also meant I could
at least now directly save PDF files.

Next I fully uninstalled acrobat pro and went to acrobat site and downloaded free acrobat reader (now version 8) from Site Link

(its top RHS of this page)

The download process is a little complex as it first downloads a downloader
and then when it goes into install its tries to install a photo album
program first (hit cancel).

Anyway after 10 minutes I had reader installed and restarted system and now
it all works and no more little red squares.

Such a pain!

Interesting.
Just to be clear, you now no longer have Acrobat Pro on the machine, is that right?

Correct Chris - I did full advanced unistall option for acrobat pro.

Have full legal acrobat standard 7 here as well , and debating wether to now install it , but probably won't as have little need to make PDF files.

Plenty of Free PDF makers out there now, we use some at work..

Uninstalling Ie, and then uninstalling and reinstalling takes 15 mins - less time than you have wasted already...

The problem is not with IE - it's with that bloatware Acrobat software.

I gave up using Acrobat writer years ago because there are now very good free writers such as CutePDF. Now they aren't as comprehensive as Acrobat, but there are very few people who need all the features, and they will buy the latest version at great expense as they should.

Adobe can't even produce a good PDF reader - It took years to get the reader stable again after V5 - V6 was a crock, and V7 was enough to make your eyeballs bleed with frustration. V8 appears to be stable again. But now it forces other crapware onto you with its download policy so you have to be alert to just get what you need.

I use IE 7 with no problems, the transition from IR 6 was seamless & problem free.

Put the cursor on a PDF file right click once, select OPEN WITH and select the type of file you wish to open it with ....ie Acrobat 6 or CHOOSE PROGRAM and you might see Acrobat 6 in the list

It definatelly sounds like an issue with the ActiveX plugin for IE. We have had a similar issue here at work that was caused when they tried to "push" out Reader 7. It broke 6, didn't fully install 7 and left the clients with 2 versions of Reader, both unable to open PDF's. You could try a repair on the installs of Reader or Pro 6 or upgrade Reader to 7 or to 8 as someone already suggested. Pro should still remain in tact.

If this is on a work PC, the lack of administrator rights could deny you from adjusting file associations too.

Failing that, uninstalling both and reinstalling may be the only option. Even this doesn't always work and a trawl through the registry to remove the links to the Active X components before reloading the programs is a surefire way to get it working again as the uninstall doesn't remove everything the install jams into the registry.

Is this on a work PC?

Hi

Had the same problem and I live in PDF's so I had to find a fix. My problem was in the add ons. Go to tools, internet options, programs, manage add-ons and then make sure all the acrobat ones are enabled.

Hope this fixes it.

Have fun

Craig

PS going the other way by uninstalling acrobat and reinstalling it will fix it becase on the install acrobat makes those settings happen.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I ended up un and re installing Acrobat Pro.
Plus a new intall of Reader 8.

Now works as it should!

Funny thing is we have two other machines here that run Adobe Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, plus Font Management, plus Go Live plus god know what else.

These are both near new machines with plenty of grunt, guess which ones we have the most troubles with? Incompatinbilities, Printer Drivers doing weird things, you name it.

Ahhhhhhh the joy of it all
