Mr Fawlty
I'm quite upset not one of you coves has made a pledge to King & Empire. Yes it's Empire Day...
Perhaps Gramps will accompany us all on the piano forte as we sing a rousing chorus of land of Hope & Glory will set the scene for my totally illegal fireworks display this evening.
On the count of 3
1,2, 3....
Land of Hope and Glory,
Mother of the Free,
How shall we extol thee,
Who are born of thee?
Wider still and wider
Shall thy bounds be set;
God, who made thee mighty,
Make thee mightier yet
Thy fame is ancient as the days,
As Ocean large and wide:
A pride that dares, and heeds not praise,
A stern and silent pride:
Not that false joy that dreams content
With what our sires have won;
The blood a hero sire hath spent
Still nerves a hero son.

The Queen (any queen for that matter) has absolutely no interest in me. None, zilch, nada. This state of affairs is reciprocated.
And I am at great pains to point out that I have no interest in any local queens also, especially any I might meet in any deserts.
"Land of Hope and Gory" might still stir my heart, but I still Call Australia Home.

As they made us recite at school in the 1940s -
I am an Australian
I love my country - the British umpire
I salute her flag - the onion jack
I promise geoffrey to obey her laws
Then we would sing "God save our gracious King" while the Australian flag was unfurled. Then we marched into class, to stirring music played by the school drum & fife band. This happened every Monday morning.
Ahh - Umpire Day - we got a half holiday! It made us so loyal.
Enough sickening nonsense for a lifetime, so I won't pledge today thanks Mr Fawlty!
Loyalty is about being a good citizen not pledges mindlessly recited by school kids, I reckon.

Mate - I am so old that I can remember going into
Adelaide city with my family to celebrate VJ day and the end of the war! Now when did VJ become VP day?

Although we may be close to the same age group I do think it was before my time in another place and another land, though still being a British subject...or am I missing something?...lol. When did demise of Empire Day come about?

Wasn't it something like: I love God and my country,
I honour the flag,
Serve the Queen,
And cheerfully obey my parents,
Teachers, and the Law.
So Be It.

We have 2 daughters, 1 born on 26/1 Australia day ( she thought she was special, as everyone celebrated her b'day) and the other on 24/5,Empire day (which is all but forgotten) .
Hows that for being patriotic?
(The boys were born pretty close to Christmas and
Easter)
Can also remember lining up at school in the playground, to say the pledge!!
Had trouble explaining to daughter what Empire day was all about as it holds little significance now.
cheers,
Joan
