Gday,
What track are you talking about, the normal road, or a track you know of?
Also why? What do you want to know?

Dunno mate

Which track are you talking about? North of the James Ranges or South?

Looked at that track(on the south side through the ranges) some years ago. It was pretty washed out then circa 1993 and it may only be a dotted line on the map. I could be wrong. Plus you might need permission from the Abbott families of Wallace Rockhole to access that land.

There is a track leading from Stuart Hwy through the old Stuarts Well area through to Boggy Hole but permissions must be sought from Orange Creek Station and Henbury Station.

I have been that way a few times with permission.

Then there is a track from Ellery Creek through to Wallace Rockhole and in days gone by that wasn't a problem for access to Wallace Rockhole.

Yep thats the one I was talking about. Had to winch a Jackeroo out of the mire last time we were in the vicinity. AFAIK that track is not used that often BUT things could have changed in the mean time.

Gday,
When you say I see.....Are you looking at google earth?
If so be carefull, some of these tracks shown might not still be there.
If your familiar with doing this sort of driving go for it. If not, most of this land is freehold aboriginal land and generaly dry ( no grog) and permits should be carried.
There is a turn off, off Ellery Creek north of Boggy Hole between the Elery /Finke Junction and the main road. This is a good graded track ( for a fair while) as it leads through a couple of out stations.
As Willem said, give the Abbots a call at Wallace rockhole and check with them.
There is also heaps of tracks south of Boggy Hole but you want to make sure your on the right one because you can go along way before you know your on the wrong track, LOL
Have fun.

Willem I read your great report on your return to the Simpson centre...great read..but what a significant change in the vegetation! & I thought last year/this year was a pretty good year out that way. (got a mate 250k NW of Bodourie = eastern Simpson ..that area has had 25" since Christmas) we are off in 10 days doing the Hay River out of Birdsville then Alice Willuna & Canning Gibb River etc

Les

There was a bit of a drought on by the end of 2005. Very strong southerly winds blew in the Simpson over the summer of 2005/2006 and when we drove to the Geo Centre the sand hills had been topped up with fresh soft sand on the crests and many of the spinifex clumps and other shrubs had had their roots exposed by the winds. It was very dry and there wasn't much new growth in the desert.

In 1987 we travelled through those areas in a lush year. The spinifex was seeding and the plant life was rejuvenated. You can see the difference in the two Geo Centre photos in the story.

This year there has been quite a bit of rain in the Simpson and it should be looking good again.

I still haven't found my plaque and will just have to go back again to look for it. Have not driven the Hay River yet, either. There is always somewhere new to go...lol

Enjoy your trip.

Hi Les

No permit required for that track, but as it passes through Aboriginal Freehold land, you would be wise to get permission from the owners before travelling through ($2000 fine for unauthorised access if they wanted to enforce it). Talk to Ken Porter at Wallace Rockhole (08) 8956 7993 or via email info@wallacerockholetours.com and he can help you with information.

Hi Les

I have been to Boggy Hole a few times, and the Ellery Creek track as well, but not the Boggy Hole to WRH track, yet. I have tried once to find the track at the Boggy Hole end, but was having trouble with my laptop and moving map at the time and didn't locate it.

If I ever get time off work, I plan to have another crack at it soon.

There's also another old track from Areyonga to Tempe Downs which used to be the road in that area before the Mereenie Loop was constructed, but this needs a permit for the Areyonga end (which I have) and permission from Tempe Downs (which I don't have yet).

Good luck with your trip.

Cheers

Member Willie(Epping), (now lost in the Kimberley somewhere..lol) was on that Areyonga Tempe Downs track in March. He went up with a mate of mine who has permissions from everyone. I don't know if anyone is living on Tempe at the moment. Sidney Coulthard used to be Trad Owner there but I believe that he has passed on.

It is a very interesting drive(I went there in the mid 90's with permission) and the country side is very lush for Central Australia

Thanks Willem

I'll check with the traditional owners at Ilpurla, which is just down the goat track (can't call it a road!) from Tempe Downs.
