Hi all,
I am looking at purchasing an MQ-MK SWB diesel, but am undecided of weather or not I should be looking at the turbo version, or to stick with the N/A version. Has anyone owned or had experiences with these vehicles? What are their good and bad points? I am looking to spend around 5k, so to leave a little for some mods. Is this enough to get a decent one? Unfortunately I don't have enogh dosh for a GQ, but have seen a few nice looking MQ's around which got me motivated. I have not had any experience with this vehicle myself, and am struggling to find any info on them, so any advice, and experiences good and bad, would be greatly apreciated.
Oh, and i don't mean to sound rude, but I am 100% Nissan, so don't bother trying to talk me into buying a Tojo!!
Cheers. Tristjo.

G'day Tristjo. With out a doubt the turbo version is vastly superior to the NA engine. Pre 1985 were prone to crook suspensions from the factory, although most around today would have had some sort of aftermarket
suspension substituted. All are tough little trucks but are restricted by wheel travel, esp[ecially the shortys. A rear locking diff is virtually manditory to do any sort of serious off-roading. Apart from the lock nut on the mainshaft, the driveline is typical Nissan, virtually bomb proof. The diesel SD33T is likewise and for the "casual" four wheeler, do not overlook the petrol 2.8 litre. It is a potent engine in the light weight SWB.Will sing at 6000 rpm all day! Good luck.

I recently picked up a 1984 MK patrol with a SD33T under the bonnet. I highly recommend it. Goes like a rocket. I have a 3" straight through exhaust, and have disconnected the pre-air filter. Any questions, email me. Only to happy to talk deisels.

Thanks, mate!
So, do you have the wag, ute, or shorty?? I was interested in the shorty, but was unsure of their stability?? Have found a couple in the trading post for around 6k, and they sound reasonably good, but I guess you can only tell by goin and looking, eh! If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your's?? A mate recently bought a turbo diesel landcrueiser 60s for arond 7k, which was a bargain price, but has since found out that the swivvel hubs need rebuilding, and the head gasket has a pinhole leak so, what is your thoughts on buying a 2nd hand turbo?? Are there any specific problems i should look out for?? I got scared off the diesels for a while, because of the (possible) expensive repairs and was looking at petrols, but when I worked out how much they drank, the fuel bill would just break me!!
Any more info you have would be greatly appreciated, because I have never owned a diesel, and want to get as much background info as possible.
Thanks again, Tristjo.

G’day,
I payed $6500 for
mine. The bloke wanted $8000. Mines got no rust and a 1yr old paint job. 33” tyres, A/c(which stop working the other day, think it needs re-gassing). The turbo is fine so far. The trucks got heaps of go, I can sit at 110km/hr on the highway no worries. Been 4being in it half a dozen times, bogged once in mud. Very capable beast. I have a SWB hard top I think their called. The back is removable though, and is lots of fun without it. Mines got the 3’ straight through exhaust which makes it roar and whistle.
What else can I tell you. Fuel I use is approximately 12lt per 100km, I think this is a little higher then most, not really sure why, could be how I drive it!! It really does go. I recommend disconnecting the pre-air filter, helps the rev’s pick up quicker. LSD in the rear, its probably worn out though, I hear you only get 90,000km out of these. Shouldn’t be to much work to shim it up though.
Recommend trying to get power steering if you can, I missed out, I couldn’t resist this one when I saw it. Probably cost about $600 to fit after market or from the wreckers. The 33’s don’t help the situation. I got 5 speed, wouldn’t touch a 4 speed, you gotta be able to do 110km on the highway.
Not sure where your from, I live in
Brisbane and go to UQ university. If that’s anywhere near you, your welcome to drop by and I can take you for a spin.
Hope this helps, I love my truck and its still relatively new so love talking about it. Feel free to ask any more q’s.
I can send you some pics if you give us an email address.
Cheers
Ryan

Pics would be great, mate! My email is: tjs85@hotmail.com. I am thinking of doing something around christmas time, maybe early '04, and am thinking of something in the vacinity of 5k. This would hopefully leave me enough dosh to do a few mods, and get a fresh set of mudders. I have been told that they need a diff lock or two to really perform offroad, so how do you find it with just the LSD?? Even though I have been around fourby's all my life, this will be my first fourby, so I am hoping to do it right the first time, and not be put off. I guess thats why I want a Nissan, dems bloody great trucks!! I currently own an '83 Nissan bluebird, and even though I have been flogging it for 2 years now, it still has never broken down, and I only paid $150 for it!! But I think it is time I got something that mite slow me down a bit, cause all my family and friends now call me a "pshyco", and I am even starting to scare myself. Any way, I am also from Briz vegas, so where abouts do ya take your truck offroad?? We have so much great offraod territory up here, there is always sumwhere new to go. 12ltrs/100km sounds good, it's about what the bluey does at the moment(needs a carby rebuild). My brother owns a GQ Patrol, and it has been a really great vehicle. It has never given him trouble, and has gone everywher he has pointed it. Pity I can't afford one, i'd give anything for coils!! Anyway, it's about 2am, n i am gettin sleepy, so I will stop askin q's. If you could post us some picks, it would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks Ryan.
Tristjo.
