Hi

I have a 2001 Landcruiser 100 series (live axle) that has a slight "harmonic" vibration at 40kph that comes and goes at speeds above 40.

I thought it was front tailshaft, so I has the tailshaft balanced and no difference.

Vibration seems to be vehicle speed dependant (not engine revs) and is starting to annoy me some what.

Any help appreciated.

It could be the wheel alignment or wheel balance.

Thanks Kev - new front tyres, balance and Pedders wheels align - vibration still there.

Also have balanced rear tailshaft, fitted new front and rear output shaft bearings in transfercase, new front wheel bearings and Birfield Joint bearings (preload as per spec)

About the only thing to do now is CV joints!

Kev
wheel alignment or balance wouldn't cause a harmonic vibration, that would cause a drag or shudder in steering...????
there would be any number of things that could cause Harmonics ,bearings in Wheel ,Diffs,Gearbox,Alternator, or even a simple thing like a hose or pipe touching the body and transmitting the noise, I just this morning spent $2180 having the Transfer Case rebuilt along with a couple smaller jobs. Turn the radio up and wait ,

kktdw,
I had a very similar vibe with my 80 series 2 weeks ago however it was at hiwghway speed. Ii ended up being a loose wheel bearing which was not evident until the splined outer was removed exposing the bearing adjustment nut which was loose. When the splined outer with the 6 cone washers was in it held it tight enough to seem like the wheel bearing was adjusted properly. But when I removed it there was play in the bearing. I put a new locking washer in and tightened the locknut to specified tourque and the vibe is gone.
Mind you I spent every night under the dammed thing checking tailshaft splines, uni joints and suspension bushes. The thing that clicked for me was when I removed the front shaft and drove it as a RWD it seemed far better when driving in a straight line however when slightly turning left or right it would wobble and then vibrate.
In the end, it took me 10 minutes to fix the silly thing.

Make sure you check all 4 wheel bearings

hope this helps

Robnicko

I will go over the bearings just to make sure.

However, I got under it agin last night and wiggled the tailshafts and at the slip yoke (splines) there is a little looseness. I got a funny feeling this is the prob.

All bearings reaplaced, new tyres, wheelalign, both I and Toyota have adjusted bearings, new bearsings in wheels and Transfer case, new bearings in Diff after I blew a crownwheel and pinion (my fault), uni-joints have been checked and seem OK - alot of $'s have been spent.

If it is the tailshaft splines, I can't understand why they would go at 135,000klm`s?

I was in a nother LC100 the other day and it had the same prob - at 90,000klms.

thanks for the reply and I will keep everyone posted if i solve the vibration.

Thanks Rob

Have been over the two front bearings a dozen times - preloaded to spec and recently re-done by Toyota when they did brake disc bolt recall.

However, the rears haven't been checked for a long time - I will do these and see how things go - I have a slight clunk down the rear from takeoff - could be the bearings!

Thanks for your help

The slight clunk could be the rubbers on the end of the sway bar where it mounts to the body links. They should have no up/down movement at all in them. Mine had the take off clunk as well but replacing these made it disappear!
They are only about $2 each and very easy to replace

Hi,
Mine makes a knock, knock noise between 40kph and 75kph like a tooth is missing on the crownwheel. 3 seperate mechanics (good ones) have checked the vehicle and none can figure out what it is. driven without front shaft, still there, driven without rear shaft, still there. Diff lock engaged can't hear it but dirt more noisy anway. New tyres still there. Done all bearings brakes etc ..still there.
Can't hear it with the windows down only when they are up.

Ken it sounds like the slip yolk on one of your (or both) shafts. Is it worse when going down a hill only giving it enough throttle to stop it de-cellerating. If so slip yolks. Give them a wiggle when parked and no load on them. If it vibrates under load front uni on rear shaft, if vibrates on full decelleration, then rear uni on rear shaft.
Regards

Tour Boy - I think you have got it - in both front and rear tailshafts the slip yokes have a small amount of axial play (up and down) as I could wiggle them by hand.

The car goes into a tailshaft joint when I get back from Wanaaring after the long weekend.

I will keep you infromed if this solves the problem

hi Ken
I have 2003 100 series live axle I have same problem but mine happens at higher speeds . I have had no success in solving this problem it has been looked at by driveline services to see if my are ok and they were fine. The noise came after I put a lift in , that has since been removed but problem is still there. When I put my mud tyres on the noise is gone but that could be the tyres over powering the noise. This problem is annoying the hell out of me as well. People have said to just leave it and see what happens but my lc only has 41000 klms on and if same thing goes bang it could cost allot of money to repair. If I solve it I will let you know.GOOD LUCK

Dom100lc

why did you take the lift out?

I am lookinfg to do this with some King springs and Koni shocks.

The big trick with a lift is to ensure that the front-end is adjusted properly with a caster kit - that way the angle between the diff input flang and the transfer case output flang remain constant (parallel). If done propoerly, these should stay aligned and have no vibration.

I think the problem with mine is that the spline as are worn and vibrating

will keep you infromed as to progress on this very annoying one.
