Hi
Just joined up yesterday after about 2 years sitting on the sidelines, looking and learning. Took six months off in 2005 to do a lap around the block. Recently got a new Rodeo space cab with slide on camper (biggest challenge is where to put a second spare without having it in the space cab). More travel planned in August up the Birdsville and across to Frazer Is. So much to see...so little annual leave!

G'day Linda and welcome.

More travel equals more experience. You'll soon be able to tell some of us how to go about things:-))

Welcome Linda, I hope you find all that you need here as I know I have, plus a bit more. You certainly are a brave lady to go travelling by yourself, but then again, why not?
Happy tracking,
OzeSheila.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I've certainly learned heaps from this forum. Scoured the pages day and night before the big trip in 2005 and amazed at the knowledge and experience out there. I don't travel alone but am never short of willing travel companions. Hopefully there will be a group of five or six of us going up the Birdsville later this year. In the meantime I'm just trying to come to grips with which buttons to press to post to this forum!

cheers

Just be careful Linda. This site can become addictive and with all the toys and tricks mentioned, you may soon be out of money.

Hi Sand Man. Do you mean that after the GPS, laptop, UHF, waeco upright, deep cell, MP3, CDMA etc that I've already got that there are more toys to buy?? There's always something else 'important' to get, isn't there!

Hehehehe!

Well, to be fully understanding of all the stuff talked about on the Forum, you need to be the owner of both an Engel and a Waeco fridge, have a dual battery system supported by two generators (Yamaha and Honda) and a Solar Panel, drive both a Toyota Landcruiser and a Nissan Patrol, and run a variety of tyre combinations from BFG, Cooper and Bridgestone, to suit individual driving conditions.

Then you get into really detailed stuff and need to have both a Garmin (Doug's preference) and a Magellan GPS as well as a PDA running Oziexplorer, CoPilot and TomTom, with input from at least one bluetooth GPS receiver. Then because this display is sometimes a bit small, you need the backup of a Laptop which runs Microsoft Vista but with the ability to also run Windows XP for those "legacy" programs. Map reference for the Map reading applications should not be restricted to one, but at least two sources from both NATMAP & HEMA so you don't get lost.

Now while you are camping in your Black Wolf Turbo tent, or OZTENT, in a remote location away from where you left your Kimberley Kamper Trailer, you need to decide if you will fire up the Cobb cooker, or make do with the contents of the Dreampot which you initiated that morning.

Phew!....there are plenty of other "must haves" you must have as well, but I have just realised I don't actually own a Dreampot, so I have to go out and buy one "in case".

As I said, "welcome to the mad house!"

LoL. Thankfully, I have been reading this forum for over two years. Otherwise I might think none of what Sandman said could possibly be true!!

He's really a terrific companion...doesn't cost much to feed because he gets his take away for free, he's quiet and he keeps away unwanted visitors :)

We'll be away early August so will be ahead of you on the track. You might get there in time for the Birdsville Cup, depending on how long you are taking.

Welcome Linda. The forum is a great way to learn stuff but it can be addictive ,even more so once you join. I love hearing from other ladies who would rather 4wd than do their nails. I do nails sometimes! Cheers Chris.

Here here, Chris and thanks for the welcome. Nails do have a habit of getting in the way of changing tyres, chopping wood, and threading lines. I like to have them during the norming working week but when I'm out in the bush I'm afraid they have to stay short and thrive on neglect.

hi Linda

welcome aboard, and good on ya ,just a new member myself ( 1 month ) you get some great info ,( some quite entertaining and interesting threads). try putting your spare on the roof of the cab, can be a bit heavey to get up & down, but like myself i had no where to put mine either, works a treat.
by the way , nice dog

Hi Steve
Unfortunately the slide on camper extends over the cab, so this isn't an option. I think the spare will have to take up very valuable space in the space cab. I met some people who didn't have a useable spare on the Gibb River road once- they had a blowout and drove a ridiculous distance on a rim only. You could hear them coming a mile away with their vehicle grinding along the road! It convinced me that you really have to find somewhere for the second spare.

cheers

Linda
